I absolutely love this pic of The Bow. It is so quintessentially Calgarian

Doesn't the Bow have the Death Ray syndrome like we see around the world, because of its concave shape, where cars are melting or, in Calgary's case, horses are cooking?

I figure that with the darker coloured glass, the orientation of the curve and the fact that it's a very pronounced, top to bottom curve that it might have less (or no) death ray effect.

The one in London that you are referring to not only curves in, concentrating the light, but it also curves down, which concentrates the sunlight into a more focussed beam, which lead to the car melting. The effect of the curve in The Bow only leads to the plaza being several degrees warmer than the surrounding area, and much brighter.

That's awesome... have people over for a dinner party and tell them "your dinner was made on the side of Canada's tallest building".

Not really a fan Quebec City's recently completed 2nd tallest but this angle is interesting nonetheless.

At first glance I thought it was a Las Vegas hotel complex.

No it doesn't. Not sure if it's because it's faceted or what. EAP has a serious death ray though. Shines crazy bright from 20+ km's away. The sloped roof does a great job of mirroring the sun.

SaskPower Building, Regina, SK.

We don't build buildings like this anymore. Sad.

Globe and Mail Article on Building Buildings over 35 Floors.

Bit of Geek Stuff for Skyscraper Fans

Slimmer, taller buildings brave the winds

Quote:
What is interesting is that the construction industry has grown up on a 35-storey condo or 35-storey office. Normal stops at 35,” said Tibor Kokai, a structural engineer at Read Jones Christoffersen in Toronto. “Now we are beyond normal. Above 35, everything is different.”

A specialist in tall buildings, Mr. Kokai notes that numerous soaring high-rises and office towers with relatively small footprints are being planned for Toronto and other densely packed downtowns. Whereas 35 storeys may have once seemed tall for such buildings, some will follow trends outside Canada and rise more than 60 and 70 storeys.

That is one thing you can't help but notice in Vancouver, how thin the buildings are. Even office towers are very slender and you don't get any large apt/condo building anywhere in the city. This is due to Vancouver not only having a height ceiling but also a very restrictive foot print ceiling in order to protect "view corridors". I can understand {even if I don't agree} them wanting a height restriction but this view corridor stuff is crap.
