An excessive additionally guyed tower

On the Pohorje Mountain west of Maribor in Slovenia, there is a 72 metre radio tower built of lattice steel. This tower, situated in a forest, is designed as free-standing, but nevertheless guyed in two levels in more than three directions!

Pohorje Radio Tower ( http://www.dxpg.at/senderfotos/slowenien/pohorje.htm )

In my opinion this guying is too excessive, as this tower is low and surrounded by forests protecting its lower parts by strong parts. But I believe the engineers who designed this tower and its owner would have good reasons for this excessive guying.

What is your opinion about this tower?

Well, I like the tower mast. As it has some deep winds in several directions the guides should be necessary. Once I saw at Hamra Fort in UAE a very high Mast with many guides. The engineers know what is need. As in middle that one has many parabolic antennas and the foundation is quite not too deep, these strutures require tied cables avoiding balance and brake down against wind. Also the base is thin and not wide avoiding collapse sidely, the cables make at a cheap way the fixing on floor.

Picture of basement

The tower stands on the roof of a small building as the picture above shows. Nevertheless, there is still some framework visible in front of the tower.

Schöckl transmitter - a tower, which was latter additionally guyed

A further interesting tower in this category is the tower of Schöckl transmitter in Austria. It was built in 1956 and until 2004 completely free-standing

It may be on rock, we have some towers here that are freestanding and guyed because there isn't enough soil to anchor it well. The guys add more stability.
