A beach on...uhm...Lake Blatchford would be money. Certainly better than along the river.

Well, I am asking because of this:
http://metronews.ca/news/edmonton/57...hawrelak-park/

Quote:
Mayor Stephen Mandel has advocated for a beach area at the lake before, but rejected the last suggestion administration brought forward, which was a $60 million plan to make the entire [Hawrelak Park] lake suitable for swimming.
Apparently you just can't allow swimming in a lake, unless it is natural?

The swimming thing doesn't really matter to me... What I was most excited for was the renderings showing the water feature being integrated into the community with buildings abutting it and boardwalks/sidewalks along it...renderings had a European feel to them. Looking at this map of land use looks like the water feature will now just be a lake in a park. So edmonton STILL won't have anywhere with a direct waterfront. I guess the next hope will be 97ave and 105st (sorry, can't rememberer what that neighbourhood is called... Rossdale?)

Just a random idea, maybe they should turn one of the military hangers into a makeshift sports facility. It doesn't even have to cost much, put goals at each end and "voilà!", you have a community soccer field on the already existing concrete pad. (lines are optional)

Under high, metal ceilings (like a hanger) and with a concrete pad, these are really common in Spain. This would offer a good venue for sports during the winter when it isn't feasible in the numerous Blatchford parks. Volleyball and Basketball courts could also be incorporated.

Iveson argues city can’t compromise on Blatchford redevelopment project

http://metronews.ca/news/edmonton/10...pment-project/

Quote:
Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson said Thursday morning that he’s not going to compromise on the future vision of the Blatchford redevelopment.

The potential costs of the proposed redevelopment were in front of city council in March and suggested the city could put as much as $150 million in and not be fully paid back for decades.

Speaking at a development symposium, Iveson spoke said the city should stay committed to the plan.

“Blatchford is the right opportunity, at the right time, to do something courageous and we need to do it right,” he said.

He said the city owes it to citizens to keep with the plan.

“We made a deal with our citizens when we closed the airport that we would be bold when we redeveloped it and I intend to keep that commitment,” he said.

Following his speech, Iveson said he’s not throwing all fiscal caution to the wind, but the project has environment and social gains that can’t be ignored.

“We want to be whole and actually make a return on this, but it’s not just about the financial return on investment,” he said.

He said a successful Blatchford development would be a model to private developers for sustainable design.

Being bold and being a bit too bleeding edge for implementation at this scale are different things. District heat, yes. District heat from wood pellets? Hmm. Smaller streets necessitating smaller service and emergency vehicles, yes. Vacuum waste collection, I don't know.

To make district heat feasible in the first stages, are they integrating with the Royal Alex at all?

Personally, I think they should aim higher than the candy-store townhomes.

Townhomes, yes, but something more forward in design perhaps?

^ I agree. The ones on the right look fine, but the ones on the left look like your typical bland suburban fare. Especially with the mustard yellow and bright red.

I realize the initial renderings were more conceptual, but I can't help but feel these newer ones (even the latter two) lack any sort of luster the previous design had. I see some buildings that look perfectly fine, but not terribly innovative.
