Bachelors in Dublin, Husbands in Edinburgh

For the past couple of weeks, around 40 of us have been going mad in Ireland and Scotland for jeddy1989's bachelor party and wedding. Best destination wedding ever.

After the vows, we all split up to go our separate ways - the newlyweds went to the Canary Islands, half their families went to London or Spain, and Joanne and I hurried back to Ireland to stay with friends in Galway. Such a fantastic trip!

It's going to take me a while to sort through all these pictures, so I'll take it one day at a time, literally.

DUBLIN - Day 1

Day one was a lazy one. We got in, exhausted (WestJet moved our direct flight to Dublin to Halifax, so it basically doubles what would otherwise be a short trip for us).

Video Link

We took the bus from the airport to the Temple Bar area. We went full tourist and got our "hotel" there.

After dropping off our shit, we went to find some breakfast. Not a fan of black pudding, but you can't get good white pudding in Newfoundland. Turns out you can't in the touristy parts of Dublin either lol

Asked our friend Deanna about the prevalence of Irish. For some reason I found her answer hilarious: "Everyone says they can't speak it, but really everyone can to some extent. They all know at least a joke. They're certainly better at it than the average anglophone Canadian is at French."

I found a Paddy Daly look-a-like. Dublin was weird for that. Saw a half dozen women who looked like Joanne, another like my ex, etc. Genetics is a strange beast.

First day was a lazy travel day for all. Half were still in Newfoundland or somewhere en route to Ireland. So Joanne and I had an early evening. But holy shit, what fun was to come...

Dublin Day 2

Enough of us were in Dublin for the day that the parents, some aunts/uncles, the grooms, and some of us in the wedding party went for a hop on/hop off tour. And then a lazy night out before the main bachelor party the next day.

Dublin so much busier than I remember, more like London and New York. Pictures don't do the crush of people in most areas justice, especially the early morning ones lol. Edinburgh later felt half-deserted in comparison.

Up early as usual for a little stroll while waiting for Joanne to wake up and get ready. It was a gorgeous day!

Set to a local band's cover of a great Irish song...

DUBLIN - Bachelor Party, Night 1

The b'ys just had a shared bachelor party since they're both dudes and share the same circle of friends.

jeddy1989's man is sssooo white but loves rap and it is DELIGHTFUL to watch him keep up with the best. Anyhow, got caught filming my best-ever 8 seconds of footage...

Video Link

Anyhow, we went to Panti Bar...

After the bar we went for food. Some interesting shenanigans in Dublin It's VERY fun to go out in, just as friendly and messy as George Street but spread over a much larger area with much better-looking people.

And Dublin has our drunken North American backs...

Then we had to try to sleep some, get in another day of sight-seeing, and then the main bachelor party lol

Dublin - Day 4

So day 4 started a little messy - those of us able to walk got up for an Irish breakfast. Then jeddy1989 and I walked to the docks to see his favourite skyscraper in the city, Emmy joined us (in her own words, "dressed like someone's Nan. I'm in rough shape b'ys" lol). We rented bikes to get back. lol Then everyone went to bed to prepare for the final and main night of the bachelor party.

Staff made it clear they did all they could but it would be our responsibility to fend off our area from club-goers.

All of the straight wedding party guests went too...

Buddy walked up to Joanne and started a full-on conversation thinking she was his mother's friend Lorraine

Then off for some food...

Dublin - Day 5

As usual, I was up first for a little sunrise stroll before we all clamored to the airport and on to Edinburgh for the wedding. Leaving behind the drunken, blissful bustle of Dublin for the ominous (though seemingly less impacted by) land of Brexit.

I wasn't quite hungover yet, probably still drunk - and compared to the busy locals on their way to work I'm sure I seemed to be on an unusually cheerful walk of shame.

You might be packed in like sardines, but it's some fucking nice to just go to the airport and get anywhere you want in Europe for pocket change. Galway kind of made me hate my hometown a little bit, because it was better - but the Vodafone sim card and cheap flights gave me even more of a distaste for Canada.

See ya in a bit, Ireland - next stop, gorgeous Edinburgh...

EDINBURGH - Day 1

We arrived at the airport and - now that Edinburgh has them again - took the tram to our accomodations off Princes Street. This time the whole wedding party - around 10 of us, plus or minus a few spouses - was sharing a single place. Great fun!

I LOVE trams. Love. Disproportionately love. I don't know anything about them, don't geek out over them and read about them, but I fucking LOVE riding them. Anywhere, empty or packed. It just sings to my soul.

EDINBURGH - Cont.

Still the first day - we did a trek up the Royal Mile to check out the reception venue. It was miserable - basically winter except the trees were still green. Exceptionally beautiful street, though - tourist-focused, sure, but lovely. Sleepy and holy fuck was it ever proper. Every second person in Dublin had a vape hanging out of their mouth. I saw very nearly none in Edinburgh. Very reserved. A few friends even thought servers and the like were being rude. I never noticed that, but perhaps a reflection of the difference in overt friendliness between home and Scotland.

I don't know any Scottish music except Mary Mac (which I hate) and this song, lol... so, set to this. Fitting given our purpose for being there.

I read a list of the reasons why Glasgow is better than Edinburgh. The missus who wrote it had one turn of phrase that cracked me up: "Glasgow is easier to get around. It's flat. In Edinburgh, anywhere you want to go is always up there."

Our second day began with a trip out to the wedding venue, Craigmillar Castle. jeddy1989 actually lives near Craigmillar Avenue here in St. John's so that's the deep family connection to the venue

EDINBURGH - Wedding Day, Part 2

The ceremony itself, set to the wedding song. I didn't get many pics of that, obviously, I was in the wedding party.

Finishing touches...

String quartet inside, and a bagpiper to announce his Honourable's arrival because jeddy1989 doesn't half-ass anything.

Then out around town for pictures...

Joanne went full Newfoundland

EDINBURGH - Day 4

For about half of us, this was our last day in Edinburgh. Started, as usual, with an early morning stroll...

When everyone else was awake, we went for an authentic Scottish experience: Mexican street corn at a cafe blasting uncensored English rap.

It's so fucking good, and you can't get the correct cheese for it in St. John's (or, presumably, Canada) so we can only enjoy it abroad.

GALWAY - Day 1

Galway was a bit of a surprise. Haven't been to the West since I was a teenager so I wasn't sure exactly what it would be like. I was even a little concerned because we were staying with friends quite far outside the core and I wasn't sure if it'd be easy to get to the center city.

Long story short, Galway is St. John's. St. John's is Galway. One has better nightlife, the other has a better core. But they're the same.

There are, of course, some differences. The first one was the omnipresent horses belonging to travelers in every nook and cranny of Galway.

For a small city, the traffic is disgusting for a few hours every day, like home.

I was up before the shopkeepers for my first look around the core.

As the shops opened, it gradually got as busy as old St. John's on a sunny summer day.

There were even more street musicians in Galway than St. John's but, as is usually the case with these things, slightly fewer were singing Irish folk songs.

And then it was afternoon. I was supposed to head back out to the suburbs but, as became a running theme of our visit, I couldn't pull myself away so they had to come to me and took us on a little tour, in the next post.

Thanks, guys!

GALWAY - DAY 1 Cont.

So, Joanne's childhood friend and her Irish husband were our tour guides as neither is from Galway but they've been living there for like 20 years. The husband thought I was from Waterford so he's now my absolute favourite.

A lot of the bathrooms in Ireland have something like this. Feels like the whole country is hosting some kind of gaming convention.

Aisling (Ash-Leeng) is a woman's first name in Newfoundland, seems to be a surname in Ireland I guess.

We went to an old tower in the woods for ice cream. Sounded like a horror movie set-up. And, to be honest, still felt like one even when we were eating our delicious whipped ice cream lol

After everyone else was going to bed, I went downtown to check out the bars. Such a great night out - it's not quite as busy as George Street in any one place, but it's spread out over a bigger area. There's crowds on streets even without any businesses open. And the people were best kind - spent maybe 20 minutes alone before a table adopted me. And, damn... such a fun night. I didn't even go home. There was even a Portuguese sailor involved.
