Construction is beginning on Phase 3, Heritage Highlands...

Hamilton Community News: Work begins on Upper Stoney Creek commercial development

Sobeys, other businesses expected to open in Octber 2017

By Gord Bowes | December 5, 2016

Work has begun on a new shopping complex on Stone Church Road East that will be anchored by a 52,000-square-foot Sobeys store.

The site, located on the east side of the Upper Red Hill Valley Parkway, is being prepared for construction to start in the spring, said Gerald Asa of Effort Trust.

Dubbed Heritage Highlands, phase one of the development will include about 25,000 square feet of smaller retailers along with the grocery store anchor, which will be situated on the northwest corner of the lot.

At the northeast corner will be a gathering space with patios, public seating and gardens surrounding an open area.

“I think you’ll be looking at stores opening for business in October 2017,” said Asa.

A Nando’s restaurant, a pizza parlour, a Pet Valu store and a dental practice have signed on for phase one, he said.

“We’re working with a number of other retailers as well,” said Asa.

Phase two of Heritage Highlands won’t begin until after the city approves road plans for Losani Homes’ development on the south side of Highland Road.

Effort Trust has been expanding its retail offerings in that section of the city, where the population has been exploding.

Its Heritage Greene complex, featuring Home Depot, opened in 2007. Heritage Commons, with an Esso gas station and McDonald’s opened last year.

“You need the residential density to support the retail businesses, otherwise it doesn’t work,” said Asa.

Here's a construction update on Heritage Highlands...

There's also a small development by a different developer under construction on the south-east corner of Stone Church & Upper Mount Albion, across from Heritage Highlands...

All photos are mine.
