As usual great shots and thanks for all the updates. I don't get downtown as much as I used to!

Disappointing that the building appears to go right to the sidewalk on the Queen St. side.

I agree. Even though the library's shape is only beginning to take form, this is already having a noticable impact at street level.

It isn't as bad as one of the pictures shows. The angle makes it look worse. Look at one of the other pictures, it is set back a bit!

There is no pleasing you, is there? 55 million dollar state of the art library with exemplary and truly unique architectural design.. nope, too close to the sidewalk. lol. If you look up a bit in another one of SekishikiMeikaiHa's posts, you can see what will appear to be an overhang of the floor above street level going on an angle along the sidewalk on Queen, but with the design of the building, I suspect this will be open on the ground floor, with the ground floor itself being set back in a fair bit, which you can see if you walk along and see where foundations are along Queen. Remember, it's a whacky stack of books..

Wondering how far you think it should be set back...?

Without actually going to take a look at the surroundings, my recollection is that most buildings on Queen and on Spring Garden are built right to the sidewalk (with the exception of the eastern end of Spring Garden where the civic-scale buildings are set back).

I'd rather they were right along the sidewalk than being set way back with a parking lot to walk across, like most developments seem to have

Going slightly off topic here, I absolutely HATE the dominance of the parking lots, with cars often seeming more important than people. Those vast parking lots outside supermarkets (Sobeys/Superstore etc) don't even have pedestrian walkways in them, so you have to dodge between cars to get to and from the store entrance. Back home in Britain, you'll normally find a thin strip of sidewalk in between each double-row of parking spaces... makes it a little safer! Wish that we could see that here too!

Nice shots. It's going up pretty quickly now, and in a few more weeks they should be starting excavation on the first of the Clyde Street buildings. That will be visible from the first vantage point, if it's not blocked off by the library by then.

Walking around this neighbourhood is definitely going to be a different and hopefully substantially improved experience in a couple of years. I can really see people looking back in 2015 or 2020 and thinking of 2000 as the "bad old days" downtown.

By the way, they're soon going to be doing an archaeological dig on the front part of the site where there's now the grass and gravel mini park thing. Presumably they'll turn that into a small plaza afterwards.

The front part is fenced off now:

I thought that little chalk board 'in my life I have learned' art thing was really interesting. It got people very interested too - it's a shame they can't interact with it anymore. Would've been really interesting if it changed over the course of construction into other phrases...

The design is great... the glass will make or break how legit this building will appear.

Is that old Oak Tree going? If so, it's a shame. I'd love to see the juxtaposition of this ancient tree and the ultra-modern glass library.
