Detroit is such an amazing contrast of beautiful remnants of wealth:

...and then urban prairies of sadness.

Urban prairies of sadness? You can technically go through the city without seeing the urban prairies... Drive anywhere in the greater downtown area (Downtown, Midtown, New Center, Lafayette Park, Rivertown, Corktown, Woodbridge, Eastern Market, etc.) and you won't find anything remotely like an urban prairie. Even the major arterial roads (Woodward, Jefferson, Gratiot, Grand River, Michigan Ave, etc.) aren't completely abandoned. And while you will find them if you go looking for them, what's the point? There's nothing there for you to see or do... You'd be better of sticking to the areas where people still live and work...

Geat pics!

^Except, I've seen pheasants lurking in Brush Park over the years. I'm like, go back to the urban prairie, pheasant! Better yet, go up to Stutsmanville where you belong.

Great set, thanks for posting them. It's fantastic to see all the rehabilitation to the old structures. As for that new infill, most of it looks like absolute shit. I guess it's better than an empty lot though.

Well Brush Park used to look like an urban prairie, but now it looks more like what you'd find on the urban fringe complete with suburban style townhouses...

I often think the same thing about Clayton, MO.

There are areas in the Eastside off of streets like McClellan, Mack, Holcomb and Vernor resemble urban prairies.

However, the city does appear to be rebounding and I'm definately impressed with the turn around of the Brush Park area.

There are lots of areas in the city that look like an urban prairie, but you're not necessarily going to find them unless you go lookuing for them. Who is going to go drive down Warren Ave on the near east side unless they conciously decide to do so. People are going to take I-94 or for those closer to the river Jefferson Ave.

I'm aware of them because my wife grew up off McClellan and all of her childhood friends and a lot of her family still live on the Eastside. So when we come up, those are the streets we roam. However, sticking to I-94 (The Ditch), you won't see much of the city at all.

But I'm talking about from a tourist's perspective. Most people are generally going to stick to the greater downtown area or the highways.
