SFU Transit Hub Open House today

For those of you interested in what SFU, Translink et al. have planned for your transiting future (a 2000-metre escalator from Lougheed Highway perhaps? ), you might want to get thyself to Burnaby Mountain forthwith as there is an open house there today. Here are the specifics:

Quote:
Simon Fraser University, Simon Fraser University Community Trust, and TransLink invite you to view background information and a conceptual design for the Burnaby Mountain Transit Hub and surrounding area.

Share your ideas and comments on the concept that has resulted from the process outlined at the November 2008 Community Open House.

Wednesday, February 18, 2009
9:00am – 4:00pm
ASSC 1 Atrium Space - AQ NE (adjacent to Renaissance Coffee)
and
6:30pm – 8:30pm
Cornerstone Building, 8982 University High Street

For more information, please contact Colleen Sondermann at 604.453.4687 or colleen_sondermann@translink.bc.ca.

Hey so did I.

Nothing about the Gondola on the main presentation boards but there was a bit of information about the Gondola on the side tables with the surveys. I spoke to one of the Translink reps about the project and they say it is certinaly more than a pipedream or a vision, and that studies are actively looking into it's feasability, but that the timelines that have been reported lately may be somewhat more advanced than they will be.

That makes sense. They were aiming for 2011.

I thought that was rather optimistic.

I doubt they'd even have the environmental assessment done by that time.

The Portland tram (which is shorter and only has two trams) took a year to build and 4-5 years from plan to fruition.

2 years for the SFU gondola is a little optimistic... though I could see 3, if they're highly motivated.
