Sea trials starting for V2V Victoria-Vancouver ferry

I hadn`t heard about this until today.

Sea trials starting for V2V Victoria-Vancouver ferry

The new passenger ferry that will provide service between downtown Victoria and Vancouver will literally be testing the waters starting Thursday in Victoria’s Inner Harbour.

...

The V2V might be the first but it won’t be the only passenger ferry service on offer as of next spring. Clipper Navigation intends to launch its own service on that route in 2018.

Passenger service between the two harbours hasn’t been tried since the Royal Sealink Express shut down in 1993 after losing millions of dollars due to low ridership after just 19 months.

Well, they are clearly aiming for a high end market as their prices start at $120 and doubles to $240 for the "Royal Class" lol. At those prices you might as well pay a bit more and go Helijet.

They leave Vancouver at 8am then leave Victoria at at 2pm. This is not a ferry service it's a short cruise.

The ticket office, along the Seawall side of the Convention Centre, beside Orange Theory, is completed, furniture, logos and all.

This thing wont last to next year. Hell it may not last to the end of the summer. Who ever got suckered into investing into this I would like to know. Maybe its some sort of bigger picture scam, I am not sure. I can't figure it out and its in plain public view but maybe that is all part of it.

At-least we can watch non public millions being flushed down the toilet in a spectacular fashion.

I can imagine it lasting the summer, but if they spend money trying to run it over the winter then it'll certainly die like all the attempts before it.

it says another service will start operating next year by Clipper Navigation. Thatès going to be a lot for two services to compete. It also takes 3.5 hrs from harbour to harbour.

Whoever wrote (or approved) the business case for this should be fired. This will fail like all others before, you can take that to the bank!

So much negativity! It's for tourists. Maybe it will be a hit with them.

This isn't a passenger ferry service which is why it will succeed. All you naysayers will look foolish. Or not..

There's already a service that takes tourists by boat from Butchart Gardens to downtown Vancouver by boat, so there is obviously some demand. The operators have clearly stated this service is aimed at tourists, not locals, hence the pricing etc. It's being marketed as a "luxury marine transportation service." They've spent the last couple years working to build bookings with tour companies, so they're definitely committed and doing their homework. It's owned by Australian-based Riverside Marine, which is a huge company so they have a lot of experience, albeit not locally.

If they pre-book through tour companies, it may work - at least during the summer.

Even though everyone else beat me to it...

Hey look, another ferry service that will go bankrupt. Who keeps on giving these businesses the capital needed to start up this service?

Surely a cab from Vancouver to Tsawwassen, the Ferry there, and then a cab to Victoria would be roughly the same price (or cheaper) and quicker? The 'luxury' factor can't be that big a draw?

A one seat journey is usually sold at a premium, but I would agree with most that this is going to be a difficult venture to maintain.

Best of luck to them though.

The Wilsons Transport bus service is about $80 each way.

even harbour air is a cheaper and most likely faster option. On a good day a roundtrip fair would set you back around $260

Did a dummy booking, Vancouver - Victoria RT May 10 - 13, not too bad, $120 each way for the Premium Comfort class which includes reserve seating and buy-on-board food. First Class and Royal Class much more $ includes 3 course meal and better seating.

I think there's a fair demand for Harbour-Harbour @ $120, not everyone is fond of flying in Seaplanes, although I'd take Harbour Air any day.

Hasn't even started and already hit a hiccup. Going to be a tough go at it.

Quote:

VANCOUVER – The first hiccup has occurred for the operators of a private passenger ferry service slated to run between downtown Vancouver and Victoria’s Inner Harbour.

A release says the V2V Empress will not begin service until mid-May, at least two weeks after its planned May 1st launch date.

The delay follows sea trials conducted over the last several days, and a release from the company says further training will be offered to its on-board team.

The release says passengers who’ve already booked trips for the first two weeks of May will be given refunds and offered other travel alternatives.
