I think you're talking about the Marriott Residence Inn, the poster child for Halifax's late '80s/early '90s faux-Victorian fetish. If you were one of the brave people wanting to develop something new in parts of the DT back then, it had to be (a) short and (b) look old. That building is the epitome of that, with red brick and styrofoam cornice decoration. I remember when it was being built I worked just down the street and would pass it every day. During most of the final stages of construction if was surrounded by tarp-enclosed scaffolding so the finishes were invisible. When it was finally removed, I cannot tell you how disappointing and unremarkable it looked. I suspect a reclad any time soon is unlikely, but it would do wonders.
