well, the little building fronting Mission and First that had not been part of the project, is now owned by Oceanwide.

It is not clear what Oceanwide would like to do with this location, although a renovation for the building is planned, according to the general contractor’s (Webcor) web site. According to sources familiar with the location and Oceanwide’s development details, there are no plans to change the Oceanwide Center development proposal in any way.

Looks like they covered the mission street side (Waldorf Astoria tower) in gravel otday. ?? Can't say that seems like a good thing. Anyone with more construction knowledge know what's up? Is anything up?

Could be many things but probably not bad. Forcing gravel into the ground can be part of soil "densification" or it could just be a temporary measure to keep down the mud and/or dust. I suspect it's the latter.

We've never been clear how they plan to proceed with this project--whether to build both towers simultaneously or one (probably the taller) first, then the other. If they do plan to build the taller tower fronting 1st St first and use the Mission-fronting site to stage equipment, spreading gravel on it would make a lot of sense.

I think my guess above is right: They are going to proceed on the taller tower fronting 1st St first and use the Mission site for equipment staging for a while. It remains to be seen when they will resume work there.

This could actually be good news: They may be wanting to clear as much equipment out of the 1st St site as possible to begin serious excavation.

I found this site from Swinerton/Webcor, which should hopefully provide updates as work progresses. The latest:

Beginning in early July and continuing until late fall, Oceanwide’s contractors will be installing foundation piles for the Mission Street Tower. This work will require some additional night work. Unfortunately, this is a 24-hour-a-day operation as the type of foundation that we are installing requires that rebar and concrete be set immediately after these shafts are drilled down to bedrock. We will do our best to limit impacts, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

In preparation for upcoming work at the 1st Street Tower, Oceanwide or its designated contractors has added additional waterproofing and will be providing additional protection to the basement wall of One Ecker. This work will include the installation of sheet piles along the perimeter and backfilling this area to provide additional support. This work will take place during daytime hours, and we apologize for any inconvenience during this time.

Partial demolition of building 78 will continue during the hours of 7:00 am – 5:00 pm. Streetlight upgrades will be finalized in this area this week.

So, it sounds like work will progress on both towers simultaneously, or at least the Mission Street tower is ahead of the 1st Street tower.

Wow. At first I thought they would demo building 78, then, I saw based on latest drawings, that they wouldn't. Now, it looks like they will?

It still says partial, which looks like the rear two thirds or so from photos.

Looks like you're correct. The models on page 24 show building 78 as a partial of what it is today.
