Austin | Motto Hotel by Hilton | 149 Feet | 12 Floors | Cancelled

The hotel is going to be built on top of this building at 1415 Lavaca next to the Texas Chili Parlor:

Here are a couple of drawings from the backup file for the next Historic Landmark Commission meeting:

Looks nice. Presumably all underground parking, or is the site too narrow to have any on-site parking?

The drawings don't show any sort of garage entrance. So I'd guess that there's no parking.

Drawings have a very highway exit hotel look to them -- hopefully they use nicer materials, but I wouldn't bet on it. I guess it's a good thing that they're able to preserve the historic structure but make better use out of it than it could have at one story.

What’s the story behind this building? I used to live a few blocks away and wondered what it was all the time.

The architect's portfolio doesn't give me high expectations. They did the Hotel Indigo/Holiday Inn Express on Red River which to me looks like one of their better projects.

That "historical" building is just plain ugly to me. But at least it will add interest to the project. The back up file didn't have any info about the historical building which is unusual for an HLC presentation. Also, didn't that building use to be Austin's Comedy Workshop?

2/3 of the building is currently a hollow shell:

That used to be Charlie’s, a popular gay bar a few years ago.
I, my wife, and another couple who were visiting from out of town went down to see a friend who bartended there.
Good to see the developer intends to keep the original facade.

I'm pretty sure Charlie's was a block further down the street and may have been demo'ed. I know we have some forumers that can corroborate that.

I forgot about this one, but we have a thread for the building replacing Charlie's:

I have one of those old historical maps of Austin and this is one of the buildings that is easy to pick out that is still here. Anyways, from the Amon Carter Museum, here is some backstory for the building.

"Fannie Wayland purchased this site at Lavaca and Fifteenth streets from real estate agent Eugene Bartholomew in 1881. Her husband, John, added the three towers to the building, which had been built as a house, and turned it into a grocery, grain, and provisions store. The structure was used for the Capitol Oyster Bar in the 1970s and 1980s and is now the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association building. Photograph courtesy of Texas Osteopathic Medical Association."

The history of this building is interesting. I had no idea. But it's been chopped up and rebuilt quite a bit over the years.

I never heard of Hilton's Motto brand. So I looked it up. It kicked off only in late 2018 and basically strives to be a more budget friendly urban micro-room hotel for people (a.k.a. Millenials) who don't spend a lot of time in their room. Hilton's Motto website includes a cool promo video. But I don't think the location of Austin's Motto fits with the locations featured in the promo. Rainey St. would work though:

This project is interesting to me for a couple of reasons. 1) it's part of a developing Hilton branded cluster (along with Doubletree Suites, Hampton Inn, and the Hilton Garden Inn under construction) on Lavaca. Why that's happening I'm not sure, but find it worth remarking on. 2) It's also right across the street from the SXSW building which somehow is turning into a driver of rooms, too. (I'm thinking of the other building just across the street that was a speculative hotel project as well) I might have discounted the importance of the SXSW building itself as a hub -- either for culture or tech or both. It'll be interesting to see what else goes up around there from an office standpoint, and who decides to move in next door to South By.

You are correct. Charlie’s was at 1301 Lavaca and closed in 2011. Now a vacant lot.

Freeway architecture confirmed. Oh well, infill is good at least. I wish they'd get rid of those ugly cupolas.

12 floors? Seriously?!?

More and more I find myself supporting a minimum-height requirement as part of DT area zoning. Because this is such a waste.
