Coming federal courthouse wins design award

The $368 million federal courthouse, rising rapidly on Broadway downtown toward a 2012 finish, has been honored as one of the best new federal buildings by the U.S. General Services Administration.

“San Diego should be proud of its new federal courthouse project, one of the nation’s premier federal buildings,” said GSA Administrator Martha Johnson.

The 16-story building, designed by Richard Meier and Partners, occupies the site once occupied by the historic Hotel San Diego, It is located just west of the existing Edward J. Schwartz Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, completed in 1976. It received an urbanism award.

“The new San Diego courthouse will not only be a beautiful gleaming addition to the federal complex in San Diego,” said Jeff Neely, acting GSA regional administrator, “but its design seamlessly integrates ingenious components of energy efficiency, outstanding court and jury facilities and engaging public spaces. It is a perfect example of a truly civic building with stunning views, gardens, pedestrian pathways and a unique water feature.”

The GSA, federal agencies’ landlord, issues the awards every other year.

^ Agreed. While it was sad that nothing could be done to save the Hotel San Diego, at least it looks like we're getting a great replacement.

I understand closing E Street due to the shear size of the buildings, but permanently closing Union I'm not stoked on.

Thanks for posting the updates on construction. I don't get DT nearly as often as I should. I'm still m'eh on the design but that hole needed to be filled so bad.

From Today

Seems like it's rising pretty quickly.

Here's the back of the building, which has this really interesting rounded portion of steel. You can't see this in any of the renderings.

Man, this is sexy as hell - even under construction. I'll take this over Dubaiesque schlock any day.

All that steel looks awesome. More buildings should be built this way. I love it.
BTW the floor system looks very similar to the Bow in Calgary.
