I've always wondered why the Manitoba legislature wasn't placed exactly at the intersection of Memorial Blvd and Broadway, ie. just a smidge over from where it actually is, to provide a vista up both boulevards, rather than just up Memorial. Its location in relation to the rest of the core seems fine to me, however.

I take back what I said about the alternative location at the Forks. Just noticed the railway and train station (built 2 years prior to the Legislature).

I also now understand what the "intersection" idea. Not across the street, but the intersection. The one thing with that is that it would break the street grid and, depending on what year the buildings on the north/east corner were built, a few would have to have been demolished.

So unless it would have been possible to shift it east (and preserve the visas down anyone of those streets), I think that might have been the best spot.

A Queen's Park style treatment with Broadway diverging in a circle around it would have been pretty cool, and very dramatic. But the way it is with the backyard opening up to the Assiniboine River is nice too.

The biggest annoyance with the Legislature is the 1950s style surface parking lot that surrounds the building. It should just be paths and such with lanes for drop-offs, emergency access and such... not parking for random staffers.

I wonder when this building will be torn down. Probably just a matter of time since it has no heritage value left.

Check this out, Allen Gardens.

In 1879, the Pavilion Hall was built. It included a glass conservatory and was also used for concerts and social events. Oscar Wilde gave a lecture here in May 1882. The Hall burned down in 1902

The Forum could easily still be restored to its 1968 facade.

The Forum? Not for a good while. It's still functioning quite well as an entertainment centre which I assume is profitable.

Winnipeg at peak urbanism.

Prior to the gradual decline and bottoming out of downtown by the mid 90's, and now since the mid 2000's, the slow but steady rejuvenation.

The loss of the streetcars really hurt though.

The last time I went in there the Best Buy had recently closed down, the arcades and bar upstairs didn't look particularly healthy and the whole place was relatively empty. I suppose the cinemas were/are doing well. I have not been there in years though so I don't know if business picked up.
