Is the existing school coming down? Doesn't look very old...Maybe 70s or 80s? New school looks great. Looks like something you'd find in the suburbs, but I like it nonetheless.

From the Chicago DPD twitter page
“Commission approves a 10-story, 45-unit project at 365 W. Huron St. The developer of the $36 million project will pay $500,000 into the Affordable Housing Opportunity Fund. ”

Gems 2 seems to be preparing the mat floor via the webcam. It looks like the crane base is going to be near the NE corner. I figured they would have placed it on the west end to be as far away from the two vista cranes traffic as possible.

When two seperate sites have cranes so close next to each other how do the crane operators communicate with each other? It has to be hard enough for two operators to communicate on the same site.

Although groundbreaking was a few months ago, the 5 story student center for Columbia University at Wabash & E 8th St was issued a new construction building permit for the foundation + first floor slab. Should look good if they do it right

Also....building permit was issued for the Dunkin Donuts parking lot on North Ave near Milwaukee and Damen (https://www.google.com/maps/place/19...!4d-87.6767259). 5 stories - bringing total unit count to 15. Not sure if that means 15 extra or something like 9 or 11 extra. Includes ground floor commercial space Anyway, good to see ...

^ The permit is only for the parking lot, correct? Will the development include the 3 story building that the Dunkin Donuts is located in? Just hoping nothing happens to it, as it has some very nice brickwork on its facade.

I know it's a miserable walk over there, but does anybody have pictures of the navy pier hotel? I would think they are way past demo by now.

The existing building is staying as is. Technically the new construction will be an addition.

They get to suck some FAR of the existing one and can share stairways.
The upper floors one the donut shop didn't have their own stairs. Access was via the gym next door.

1925 S Michigan - some permits recently issued for this beautiful Motor Row building. Apparently the owner is the "South Asia Institute" which I couldn't find a lot of info about. I'm guessing it will be converted into some kind of museum/gallery/offices?

^ Thats a nice building. And that’s straight up India/Pakistan kinda sounding.

Very interesting, I have no idea what could be happening. I wonder if one of the local Universities are behind this? I imagine an India-focused Museum would belong on Devon Ave

That's a very nice building. The address it's registered to is a private residence of what appears to be a husband and wife, who are both doctors of some kind. Both are originally from Pakistan it looks like. Hopefully they do something with it like you suggest. That would be cool.

I’m guessing it will be some sort of medical office

Perhaps, though these doctors are not young at all. Normal retirement age. Could be one, but I hope it's a cultural thing, not a medical thing

This Google expansion is separate from the HQ Chicago is bidding for.

Google plans to expand in Chicago
Quote:
By Ryan Ori
Google will expand its workforce in Chicago, as part of the company’s plan to add thousands of U.S. employees this year, CEO Sundar Pichai said in a blog post Friday.

But it’s unclear exactly how many of those new jobs will be in Chicago. Pichai’s post, which followed a groundbreaking for a Google data center in Tennessee, said the company plans to invest in new or expanded offices in nine states, including Illinois.
....
A spokesman for Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the Illinois expansion will happen in Chicago but did not have other details.

“Google is a global company that has defined the digital age and continues to lead at the cutting edge of the tech economy," Emanuel said in a statement. "The decision to grow in Chicago is a vote of confidence in our city’s future and a testament to our position as a thriving hub for talent and innovation."
....
It’s unclear whether Google’s planned expansion would be limited to that building, or if the technology firm will seek additional office space in the city.
