Here's the first of a couple of threads about south-east Asian cities that I've visited during my 5-month trip at the beginning of this year. Let's start with Vientiane, Capital city of Laos, one of the poorest countries in the world.
Among the South-east asian travelers community, Vientiane is seen as a sleepy town. Of course it's quite calm compared to other nearby capital cities such as Hanoi or Bangkok, but after one month in the Laotian backcountry, it feels like a busy metropolis!
Downtown is relatively busy and popular with tourists, but outside the central area and the main suburban arteries, the outlying neighborhoods are actually a bunch of urban villages with few paved roads. Motorbike is king and the local sport is pothole dodging!
