Vientiane, Laos

Here's the first of a couple of threads about south-east Asian cities that I've visited during my 5-month trip at the beginning of this year. Let's start with Vientiane, Capital city of Laos, one of the poorest countries in the world.

Among the South-east asian travelers community, Vientiane is seen as a sleepy town. Of course it's quite calm compared to other nearby capital cities such as Hanoi or Bangkok, but after one month in the Laotian backcountry, it feels like a busy metropolis!

Downtown is relatively busy and popular with tourists, but outside the central area and the main suburban arteries, the outlying neighborhoods are actually a bunch of urban villages with few paved roads. Motorbike is king and the local sport is pothole dodging!

Downtown Vientiane

Downtown is packed with tourists!

Presidential palace

Patuxai, Vientiane's own Arc de Triomphe!

Don't drink and drive, sponsored by the national brew! Thumbs up for the infography as well!

Photographer for tourists outside Pha That Luang, the most popular monument in Laos

The tallest building in Laos

Downtown

Mind your steps!

It's OK to take away

Outskirts

Pha That Luang, the national icon

Vientiane is a booming town

Stopped at a small restaurant while exploring the suburbs on a bike

The Mekong river with the distant high-rise building, and Thailand across the river

More of Vientiane and of the rest of Laos can be found here

Thanks for watching!

Great to see Laos on here. I missed Vientiane when I passed through. It reminds me a bit of Chaing Mai. I really wanted to see more of Laos but didn't have the time. I hope you post some of you back-country photos. Thanks for the shots.

Nice. Looks like a low rise version of hong kong. Food looks really good. Those kabobs look on point.

Considering I'm Laotian and have never been to Laos makes me want to visit even more. Great perspective.

Strangely, it reminds me of Nassau, The Bahamas... it's the quality of the filth, I think.

There are two kinds of filth -- relaxed and genteel, and aggressive and dangerous. Nassau and -- it would appear -- Vientiane have the relaxed and genteel sort.

Fantastic thread! I'll definitely have to hop over and check out your other flickr picks of the Land of a Million Elephants! It warms my heart to see that Vientian seems to be turning around the the burnt-out morass that seems to be indicative of back-water communist countries.

I just flew back from Hanoi today, of course there are some striking similarities. I'll post a thread soon.
Love your street shots!

^ I Visited Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, southern Vietnam and eastern Myanmar. So for the big city treads, there will be Bangkok, Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City. Plus maybe some rural photos some time.
