So I am sitting at my desk trying to get settled in after the weekend. I decide to turn around and look out my window, and notice how nice it looks outside. Then I happen to notice a crane sticking out between the buildings.

This crane is too far north to be for the Convention Center and is west of the Marriott.

Well, it looks that a crane has appeared at the Joske site.

I am going to head down there at my lunch and check it out.

I wonder if that's to replace the top that was removed.

I was thinking about that Joske's project and wondering if anyone had heard anything about the proposed tower.

The last thing I've found is this:

It would look so nice:

(I'm jealous of your view BTW).

So the crane is on the Joske site. I remember reading that the structure would be built to accommodate a vertical addition in the future and another source stated that there may be apartments on the upper floors.

Does anyone know what is actually going up?

Below is the most recent rendering and it does not have any additional floors:

  • I believe that only the first three floors will be retail and restaurant (based on development services documentation from a while back), but how many additional floors will there be?
  • Will there be additional floors of residential as rumored in the past?
  • What kind of future vertical addition will this current construction be able to support?

From what I have heard, which is very little, I would assume that only the retail component will be constructed (at the moment). Then sometime in the near to not to distant future there will be a residential component of several floors, but not necessarily to anywhere close to the original tower proposal. That tower proposal is being reworked to be a little east on Market St.

Here are some cool images of the site currently:

I don't know how better to answer your question. Ash still wants to build a hotel tower and either a residential tower or add residential to the hotel tower.

It's a very tricky situation that will take time.
Is this project still alive but for a different DT location? Or completely dead?

From the SABJ:
Oviatt said work crews are laying down a strong enough foundation to add a 14-story building on top of the existing Joske's Building structure, but those plans remain pending.

I'm fairly certain that should say 24-story. I'll have to contact the writer.

Is the building really 720k square feet? That's more than half the size of North Star. Or should that be 72k?

The entire building will be that big. I know for certain the original Joske's configuration was a little over 500,000 square feet of space. So with them opening up more space and add space, that number would seem about right..

The Frost Bank Tower in Austin is 525,000 sq ft. That's 33 floors on nearly a full city block.

720k sq ft?...

720,000 sqft sounds about right for a mall that takes up several different city blocks and ranges from 3 to 4 floors.

As I said, the Joske's building pre-demo was a little over 500,000 square feet.

Any word from the writer if it would a 14-story or a 24-story building?

"The mall’s ownership company has given consideration to the addition of a 14-story building atop of the former Joske’s structure, but there are presently no plans outlining its specific usage or a development timeline."

We got more confirmation that it's only 14 stories. http://bexarwitness.com/project-upda.../#.VSgtZRPF-F4

Any word, sirkingwilliam?

Construction is wrapping up on the Joske Renovation. Rivercenter Mall is now called The Shops at River Center. A new store 'Its Sugar' has opened its doors and Eateries WhichWhich, Johnny Rockets and Starbucks should be opening soon.

The renovation/addition opens up fully next month with a total of 50 new slots for stores/restaurants, as well as the H & M, Dave and Busters and Alamo museum.

In addition I know that there is to be a Francesca’s and Fossil store. There was a Mello Mushroom sign up, but I have not seen it in a while.

The stores can't be too happy that construction made them miss the Holiday Shopping season and Dave & Busters can't be to happy to miss out on the Christmas crowds as well as the Alamo Bowl, but when it is all said and done it should be a good addition to that part of downtown.

Guess that means the dream of the nice tower we've seen in prior renderings is over.

Nice retail for the area, but once again, an opportunity missed.

Well to be honest, that was over before it really gained much ground.

There's some exciting stuff lined up for downtown for 2016; not quite the height or density most will be looking for, but all around exciting projects.

Not true. The developer is still working with the city, if I remember correctly.
