Hong Kong 2006 - Part 2

1 IFC looks so tall relative to the rest of the buildings in this picture.

2 The Star Ferry is ready to dock in Kowloon.

3 I notice an number of murals now appear all over the city. This one talks about the SARS outbreak in early 2003.

4

5 A visitor to the Shing Mun River in Shatin. A decade ago, this was a smelly sewage canal. Now people actually kayak here.

6 These older public housing estates are not towering monsters, and with a fresh coat of paint, don't look so bad.

7

8 kaitak747 took me to this village along the hillsides of Shatin. Notice the old contrasted by the new.

9

10

11 I thought these buildings don't exist in HK anymore.

12 But they are gradually being torn down.

13 More public housing :

14 There's a hotel by the Shing Mun River in Shatin. Although probably unknown to foreign tourists, mainland visitors often stay here because of its more remote location, hence cheaper prices.

15 Skyscrapers on hills ...

16 It's a smaller version of Jumbo in Shatin.

17 A number of industrial buildings occupy Shek Mun district in Shatin.

18 A brand new international school.

19 An afternoon snack.

20 The day ends at a train station in Ma On Shan, to the north of Shatin's town centre.

Those are rice flour rolls (Chinese name - cheung fun). It is very smooth in texture, rolled up with nothing inside. However, when we eat dim sum, they may add shrimp, BBQ pork, or meat in it. These ones are empty, and the sauce is a mix of peanuts, soya sauce, and seafood paste.

Sounds delicious.

That food's essentially a giant rolled up rice noodle. It looks like it's covered in black been sauce or some kind of soy-derived sauce.

I'm wondering if those old buildings have central air. Or does it get that hot in Hong Kong?

I was at the fence taking a picture of the drying laundry. Almost all buildings have AC. It gets very hot and humid during the long summers.
