Thinking out loud - if the developers were clever, maybe the original proposal was taller than they wanted to build, knowing people would want it 'reduced', reduced to the sort of project they really wanted? Think of it like a salesman throwing out a higher price than they know you will pay, and your counter offer is what he *really* wanted to get for it.

Hines wants to spend money for those untapped development rights, and I'm sure they would want to use them. It's just that as the tower was designed, it didn't fit within the zoning of the site, which is why they needed to get the special permits in the first place. The height was never up for approval, it was just a condition of the Planning Commision granting those permits. Read the last page again, and you can see how they could still build taller, but lose size in the development, which is key here.

What are the chances of this building coming out taller than what has already been designed?

^Zero. IMO "nimbyism" though I hate cliche phrases like that seems to have a healthy following in Manhattan, especialy when you start getting close to the upper east side. It has already been reduced, I would bet heavily against an increase on the original after what has just transpired. Hope to be wrong.

About as good as me climbing to the top of the Empire State and swatting down a few planes.... It won't happen. We now just have to wait and see what minor changes are made to the tower, because we already have a good idea of what it will look like.

Well, 1050 is the maximum height they can build to, so it could end up shorter, but hopefully nouvel wants this tower as tall as possible. but even at 1050, there is still a 150-200 foot skinny crown, so really this building is like an 850 or 900 so foot building with a hat. At least the design is cool and it'll be pretty tall for midtown, it's about the size of boa tower.

Although ny certainly deserves better

If the Planning comission didn't like the crown at 1200 ft, I can't see them liking it at 1050ft, especially when it is still highly visible.

If there is any merit to their decision, then, you should expect some type of redesign of the top portion. However, if it is not redesign, then I would expect their original decision to come under some scrutiny.

It was just a ridiculous decision, if we are to believe their reasoning. The tower will now be basically the height of the Chrysler Building, a tower that should at least get as much consideration as the Empire State when it comes to the spire. And it will still be taller than anything else in the area, so it's not as if the crown will now be hidden. But most importantly, whatever design changes they may make to the top could have been made at 1,250 ft.

i still don't see why they couldn't compromise, and I mean still,

Why doesn't nouvel just redesign the tower at maybe 1,150 feet or so with a changed top and see what they say. He wanted a 1,250 foot building, why doesn't he fight for it?

This makes no sense, there has to be someone with sense somewhere. well maybe not but still

What was the original height? (1100 or 1150 I think) Nouvel should at least push for the original height to keep the proportions. Maybe that could be the compromise between 1050 (too short) and 1250 (would have been nice).

The original height was 1250 ft. I don't know why you folks don't understand, but Hines was never asking for any height approvals. We keep saying that.

we know that but nouvel surely would like to build his 1,250 footer, so why not compromise with a taller building so he can keep the basic design, just change up the top a little. They proposed a 1,250 footer because they wanted to make a new huge landmark for the city skyline, why are they accepting this bullocks from city council?

If he built 1150 the design wouldnt have t change much.

They'll likely get to it by the end of the month...

Nouvel/MoMA Tower Opponents Target Quinn in TV Ads

By Eliot Brown
October 5, 2009

It seems opponents of the Jean Nouvel-designed skyscraper planned to rise next to MoMA are well-funded.

The opponents, mostly neighbors of the 1,050-foot tower-to-be, are hitting the airwaves Monday with a television ad that directly targets Council Speaker Christine Quinn, urging her to oppose the development, planned to be built by the Texas firm Hines. The ad buy comes a day before the City Council holds a hearing on the building, which needs Council approval to go forward.

The building has elicited impassioned reactions from both the architectural community, which generally loves it, and neighbors, who detest it, saying it is grossly out of scale.

“This tower will overwhelm the neighborhood and crowd streets. Christine Quinn: Say no,” the ad says, narrated by a deep voice that seems at home in a negative political ad. “Air rights are sold off and the people are sold out. Christine Quinn: Say no.”

The politics of the tower are slightly more complicated than normal. The Council often defers to the local member on land-use decisions, and, in this case, the local is Ms. Quinn. But the constituents who are most upset and loudest—members of the West 54th - 55th Street Block Association—are in the district of Councilman Dan Garodnick.

Neither Ms. Quinn nor Mr. Garodnick have taken a strong stand either way on the MoMA tower. Last month City Planning Commission chairwoman Amanda Burden took an action that Council members often seek when they’re looking for a compromise: she decreased the height of the tower by 200 feet. (While many in the architectural and development communities have denounced that move, the opponents, who have formed a group called the Coalition for Responsible Midtown Development, called the height chop insignificant, noting the tower would still be as tall as the Chrysler Building.)

A spokesman for Ms. Quinn, Anthony Hogrebe, said in a statement that the Council would be looking for a balance. "As always, the Council will be working to find an appropriate balance, providing for development that addresses the needs of the community," he said.

Why, WOULD ANYONE LIVE IN NEW YORK IF THEY DON'T WANT TO BE AROUND SKYSCRAPERS?

This kind of thing is just an oxymoron. The United States is one of the largest countries in the world, and the largest economy in the world. If they don't like skyscrapers and the urban environment, there are literally an infinite amount of other places to live.

Other than that, this tower is an architectural triumph. Would really be a shame to lose it.

How much was spent on this bogus and poorly done ad? Funny how it says the tower will overwhelm the neighborhood, but on the aerial shot of Northern Midtown, all i see are tall buildings

Video Caption: "Proposed shadow over Central Park"....WTF???
