The Chrysler graphic was made by the NYTIMES. I wouldnt put any stock in it.

Why is everyone so stuck on the silhouette graphic of the Chrysler? Ignore it, and look at the rendering beneath it showing the Nouvel among its neighboring structures and towers.. that's how I came up with the 1,300 figure.

Unless the scale is horribly off on that one, then we have ourselves a tower that easily surpasses 1100 feet. But judging by the quality of it (the Nouvel is fully rendered, the surrounding towers' massing and heights look correct), I'd say it's probably pretty accurate.

The model in the Times comes from the source, I would put more weight on that. They haven't given exact height figures, and that's probably smart, considering the "park people" will no doubt be outraged.

The crown on the top of the building makes up about a quarter of the height, so if fully occupied, this would be a 100-story tower. 1,100 to 1,300 seems about right. But even at the Chrysler's height it would be fantastic.

It'll be an instant icon worthy of the comparison to Chrysler or the Empire State...

this would certainly be the best building in New York in some time. And much better than the Freedom Tower.

It'll take some of the appeal away from the Top of the Rock deck though, that's for sure.

Yes, I guess we will loose some of these stunning Central Park views. But at least we are getting something amazing! I won't complaint.

This resized rendering shows the soaring quality of this tower...

Seriously. If anything, the view from the Top of the Rock will be enhanced by this tower. I don't think people go up there to see the park, although it is nice to see from there.

Wrong. It'll add to the view from there and make it even more interesting to look out from.

I think this article hits it on the head, especially for those who don't like dramatic change to Manhattan's skyline:

Nouvel to add 'exhilarating' building to Manhattan skyline

By David Usborne in New York
16 November 2007

Manhattan is set to get an exciting new addition to its skyline after the unveiling yesterday of plans for an ambitious skyscraper by the French architect Jean Nouvel that will rise on a slim empty lot next to the Museum of Modern Art.

Rising 75 storeys like a many-pointed shark's tooth in the midst of the busy Midtown office and hotel district, the new tower will be taller than the Chrysler Building a few blocks away and will compete with anything already standing in New York for its architectural panache and daring.

Twisting and tapering to multiple peaks high above the pavement, the building will bare its skeletal superstructure of steel on the exterior of multiple facades of glass. Also visible from the outside will be the lattice-like ventilation system.

Manhattan, which for perhaps far too long has relied on long-ago conceived skyscrapers to retain its reputation for skyline grandeur, has burst into life recently with a series of new and daring projects. Construction is at last under way on the mighty Freedom Tower at Ground Zero where several other trophy buildings by architects Norman Foster, Richard Rogers and Fuhimiko Maki of Japan are also in the works .

Now the regeneration of Midtown is taking off as well. Competing with Nouvel for attention will be Lord Foster's planned new Shangri-La hotel set to rise just three blocks to the east on Lexington Avenue and the already standing Hearst headquarters with its soaring atrium and striking diagonal grid system of construction also by Foster.

Absolutely brilliant design, but that was to be expected from Jean Nouvel.

I really hope it will be build.

Looks truly awesome. Finally a New York skyscraper to get excited about, let's just hope it actually gets built. Museums may not be the savviest developers, and this may not be the time to propose speculative office space, but its a exciting design.

Hell I can't wait to have a vew of this baby from where I live in Murray Hill. This proposal is so amazing that it by itself resolves the midtown plateau. If one building deserves to be taller than the rest in midtown, this is it!
