But putting on on the top? That's about as stupid as you can get.

So what? Spires that serve no purpose other than decoration are put on many buildings. And what about the mooring mast on the Empire State Building?

Who cares if you can see the time or not?

It beats the hell out of the conventional spire.

Dallas Snob- Did you even take the time to look at the renderings? NO ONE WILL BE ABLE TO USE THE SUNDIAL. It's only visible from above. If the sundial was visible from the ground I would have liked the concept.

Kalamia- I have no problem with decorative spires, I actually prefer them to unadorned roofs. The problem with this tower is that the spire is theorhetically funtional, but pratically dysfuntional. And they are building it knowingly. That is stupid. The ESB mast is completely different. That was built with the intention of use. The fact that it proved to be a bad concept post-construction is not their fault. This tower is the equililent of putting the largest digital watch in the world on the top of your tower, but enclosing it with opaque walls so no one can read the time. What's the point? Yes, you have the largest, or the tallest, or the highest, or the _____ whatever, but if its purposely "broken".... what's the f*cking point?

SFBoy - Who cares if you can see the time? See above. And how can it beat out a conventional spire? Since it serves no use at all as a sundial... Why not simply build a conventional spire to begin with?

If they had simply turned the entire tower itself into a sundial, creating the world's largest and tallest sundial, it would both be funtional AND fufill their marketing ploy.

And I would have liked it.

For the record, if someone builds the worl'd largest lighthouse, and fails to install a latern in the top I will bitch about that too. It would be as stupid as this is, and all involved should be banned from breeding and passing along their overwhelmingly moronic genes.

firstly calm down

secondley take a proper look at the render, the shadow is cast down the top few stories of the building, so WILL be visible from the ground

LOL. World's highest sundial?

I have to admit that Dubai's developments are an endless source of amusement.

And when I began to think that Dubai is starting to run out of "world's largest" things to build...

Neat idea either way though. We don't see other resort cities, like Miami for instance, pumping out such original ideas.
