Celebration of Light fireworks could be shortened to three nights

Vancouver Park Board will decide tonight whether to allow organizers of the Celebration of Light fireworks festival on English Bay to charge fees for limited bleacher seating at next year's festival.

The proposed charge will help reduce the significant cost of putting on the extravaganza, according to Brent MacGregor, the chairman of the Vancouver Fireworks Festival Society.

At the same time, the society is proposing to scale back the annual summer event to three nights from four.

"We are working hard to improve the Celebration of Light experience for everyone" MacGregor said in a statement. "This change reduces the celebration's impact on and disruption to West End residents and will bring about a significant reduction in costs to the City of Vancouver and Parks Board."

As a result, the society has changed next year's schedule run on Saturday July 30th, Wednesday August 3rd and Saturday August 6th. The event will remain free and will feature competing teams from several countries, all of which remain to be named.

The proposal to charge for limited seating has created some opposition from those who say the event should be free to everyone. But the society, which has been struggling financially in the past, says the added revenue will help stabilize their operations.

well ultimately, shortening it by one day significantly reduces the value of sponsoring the event....disappointing that they're contemplating that route.

it seems like its a done deal - contemplated and decided already

^ If the shows are like a few mins longer each, that would be a good compromise.
