Melbourne tower set for record

Mon, 18 Mar 2013

Quote:
Australia's second-largest city Melbourne could possibly have the tallest building in the southern hemisphere after approval Monday for a new 388-metre (1280 foot) apartment and hotel complex.

The Victorian state government said Australia 108 would become the world's 19th tallest building on completion and would be "an outstanding addition to Melbourne's skyline".

"I am proud to approve a tower that will define our city for many years to come," Planning Minister Matthew Guy said.

Architect Nonda Katsalidis said the tall, slender building which will have 646 apartments, a 288-room six-star hotel plus retail and office space, was designed to throw a spotlight on the city's international identity.

"We don't have an Opera House (like Sydney) but we have a complex culture and all those ideas were thrown into this project," Katsalidis told ABC radio.

"The hotel at the top is designed as a starburst. We took the inspiration from the stars on the Australian flag," he added.

How on earth are they planning to squeeze in 108 storeys? The occupied looks to be about 1150'.

The same way John Hancock does? Maybe they're counting the spires as contributing to the floor count like the mooring mast on the Empire state building.

Oh, lord, just chop off that clunky spire, already. lol Or, at least rework it into something more graceful. I mean, the rendering up against the Eureka, up top, does this tower even fewer favors.

Southern hemisphere's tallest building shelved
July 6, 2013
Marc Pallisco

Ambitious plans to build the southern hemisphere's tallest skyscraper in Southbank have been abandoned.
Fender Katsalidis Architects, the consortium behind the landmark Australia 108 building earmarked for 70 Southbank Boulevard, has confirmed it is redesigning plans for the site after a ''hybrid of requirements'' - from bodies such as VicRoads and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority - rendered the proposal ''impossible''.
Planning Minister Matthew Guy approved the 108-level proposal in March after a short consultation period and despite objections it would create traffic congestion and cast shadows over the Shrine of Remembrance. It was also claimed the building would obstruct a flight path.

Its scale was also rejected by Melbourne City Council.

New plans for the 2642 sq m site are expected to result in a relatively more modest sub-100-level tower or two 50-plus level buildings, but this could not be confirmed.

Probably for the better. Hopefully, the new plans show a set of buildings a bit more sophisticated.
