I've heard they don't do much in there aside from sitting around and having meetings about things.

I've heard quite a few stories about the energy industry that make you go "hmmmm".

That conversion from coal was money well spent....

The conversion to biomass at the TBGS was much less extensive than at the Atikokan Generating Station. The use of 'advanced' pellets required a whole lot less infrastructure modifications in Thunder Bay. OPG basically replaced coal feedstock with wood biomass and continued on (well, for a couple days per year anyways). There was political pressure in 2014 to keep the TBGS going, now that has been diminished.

Almost as if they knew in 2014...

It should have been decommissioned in 2014.

Total waste of taxpayer money.

I imagine the upgraded East-West transmission tie between Wawa and Thunder Bay that is under development has made the Thunder Bay Generating Station redundant.

I think the cost of the conversion of the TBGS was only $5 million. The cost of keeping it in reserve was much larger. Still, not the best use of funds though.

No, it's the fact that since 2001, the number of large energy using customers in this region (paper/pulp/saw mills and grain elevators) has declined from dozens to fewer than 10. Throw in things like more efficient light bulbs (the average house is saving kilowatts per year by using LED instead of incandescent and LED street lights use less than 10% as much energy as sodium arc lights), and generally more energy efficient electronics and appliances, as well as a declining population, and even without the tie-line, this station isn't needed anymore.

The forecasts that it would be needed were based on some very rosy predictions of mining in this region, which will hardly come to fruition. But when you consider the cost that maintaining this plant places on the electrical grid, it truly is a hindrance.

Also, this will be the last place in the country to embrace electric cars, partly because people here won't want to get rid of their gas engines and partly because the infrastructure for charging won't exist. Many areas have a large number of people on a single line, there isn't capacity on that line for all of them to charge cars overnight simultaneously; more capacity at the local level is required in rural areas to accommodate electric cars.

... Not to mention significant investment in hydro electric facilities has been made by the private/public/First Nation sectors over the past decade, both for new facilities and upgrades to existing facilities to increase production

... Not to mention the new wind & solar power production that has come online (its not a huge amount, but it helps contribute)

... Not to mention the forest industry has invested in creating their own sources of power instead of relying on the grid

Anyone know what's going on just north of the James Murphy Coal Building on Simpson Street?

They've got quite the large hole dug there.

It will be the new location of Newfie's Pub. Newfie's Pub was given a notice of eviction from their current landlord last year, and they have to be out by the end of this year so that a lawyers office can move into their current building.

The new building is being built by Lacy's Taxi, which owns most of the lots full of derelict cars on this street, and the building will be leased to Newfie's.

Perhaps it's more appropriate to put the article here:

THUNDER BAY

A few updates:
-Ground has been broken for the new Scotiabank branch on Arthur Street by Parkdale Blvd. This new branch will likely result in the closure of the Scotiabank location at May & Victoria.
-Concrete forming is underway right next to the bank for a Starbucks, and a couple other units by the sounds of things.
-The latest phase of the TerraVista condo development is pretty well framed up and closed in.
-The Delta Waterfront Hotel isn't near complete yet, an October opening is looking unlikely.

New Builds:
-The Salvation Army is getting close to breaking ground on their new multi-million dollar Journey to Life Centre.
-Fort William First Nation is in the tendering process currently to build a 3 storey office building. The shell of the building will be constructed, and then interior fit-ups completed as tenants move in.
-The province has indicated that, despite the change in provincial leadership and priorities after the recent election, the new jail facility proposed for the city is still in the plans.

Just let Northland Rail acquire/buy it already...

It makes sense for ONR to acquire it.

THUNDER BAY

The Prince Arthur Hotel will be renovated. Roughly $3-$4 million will be spent on upgrading the lobby, ballroom, guest rooms and exterior to bring the hotel back to its past glory.

I'm hearing that Gateway Casino Thunder Bay will undergo a major renovation next year.

St. Joseph's Care Group will be converting the former Thunder Bay Inn on Dawson Rd. into a treatment facility. It likely won't take a lot of work to complete the conversion. City council approved the development last night.

Apparently Lakehead Public Schools has leased out the former Hyde Park School building on Walsh St. I'm not sure to who, for what purpose or if any renovations will be required.

Unlikely that deadline will be met either. Entire main floor is incomplete (including the ballroom), and recently there was a flood originating at the 8th floor that made its way down throughout the building that will require restoration to about 5 rooms per floor.

Chartwell Select on Arundel has finally begun construction of some long-planned new townhouse units.

There's a new proposal in North Bay to develop the former Kenroc brownfield site near the city's waterfront with three condo buildings in the 7-8 storey range.

https://www.northernontariobusiness....th-bay-1057153

Quote:
A Sudbury-based developer has plans to build new condominiums on former industrial waterfront property in North Bay.

Plans for the $15-million project, to be developed by New Vision Park Property Inc., were revealed during a special meeting of North Bay council on Sept. 20.

The land in question, which has been vacant for decades, is the site of the former Kenroc industrial complex, where mining rod bits were manufactured.

North Bay has owned the land for more than 20 years and has been vocal about its desire to see the site refurbished and redeveloped.

New Vision proposes to construct three buildings, with a total of 63 units, each measuring 1,600 square feet. Units would include two bedrooms, an ensuite bathroom, walk-in closets, and an open concept living room, dining room and kitchen, along with a second, two-piece bathroom...

The Lake Nipissing waterfront condos are very popular with senior citizens. That's who will buy most of the new ones. I know a number of seniors from Timmins who have moved into the buildings along the lake. North Bay is on the best part of the lake for sunsets and the lake is big enough that the sun sets right on the water.
