It shows the business in the front but hides the party in the back. Yes that was a mullet joke.

Perhaps when the tallest ones in the GTA are done, or almost done, Ottawa might actually make this list, or fall just short of it when the Trinity project starts (65 floors/232.5m, 56/ floors/204.4m and 27 floors/130.7m). FOr now, its fun to see our soon to be tallest, the Claridge Icon, inch towards it's 45 floor (143m) Summit...

As much as I would like to see more cities on the list, this seems unlikely.

Toronto has a massive transportation problem; condos downtown are the only real way of avoiding a poor commute and there is no planned relief from this (the relief line and GO RER combined are just treading water). Once current developments are finished in a couple years, another round will be under construction.

A major recession can kill Toronto development but most other candidate cities would get hit equally as hard with the exception of Calgary/Edmonton (Alberta and Ontario have out-of-sync economic cycles).

It looks dead here : https://www.google.ca/maps/@43.62713...7i13312!8i6656

And filled with the typical condo hood crap like Rabba Fine Foods, Subway, and Firkin Pubs: https://www.google.ca/maps/@43.62707...7i13312!8i6656

Nothing there competes to my hood: https://www.google.ca/maps/@43.65959...7i13312!8i6656

I got in trouble last time I said this, but yeah, the street level there is pretty dreary. The architectural quality & street-facing presence of the new towers are not of the same quality as similar new developments in the core; while it also lacks the anchor of a traditional retail strip as other suburban high-rise areas like North York have. The parks, views, and proximity to more vibrant neighbourhoods like Parkdale - as well as further-out Etobicoke hoods like Mimico and Long Branch - are its only redeeming qualities.

So far, it's been a huge missed opportunity for creating a compelling lakefront neighbourhood and hub for Southern Etobicoke. But hey, at least it's still better than Mississauga City Centre.

Here's the scary part, over the next year or two Toronto will begin construction on a heap of towers way over the average 200 meter height we are accustomed too. So instead of a bunch of barely 200 meter towers beginning construction we're looking at towers on masse beginning in the 230-290 meter range and potentially a couple of supertalls.
