Neat story. I didn't know the store was connected to the Lord Nelson.

Here's a shot taken from the Park Victoria, I'd say mid 1960s from the cars:

Interesting, I did not know that Acadian Lines did runs within the city. That might explain why there is an Acadian Lines bus on Doyle Street in this photo:

Well, technically, yes. It was a hut, and sold pizza.

There are a few more pics of the store on NS archives. Just search for "spring garden".

Interesting that east of the Lord Nelson there was what looks to be a park.
In the 80's there was a stairway that went from the Lord Nelson Hotel lobby down to Spring Garden Road, and east of that entrance was The Victory Lounge

I believe that so called park was really the front lawn of a large house - I think I can see a structure in the picture

Acadian Lines were for those areas outside of the city. In those days 1954 to 1957 the city stopped at Dutch Village Rd - Beyond that was suburbs, county. I believe the bus I used to get was Prince's Lodge and it stopped all the way out the Bedford Hwy. It was quite some time later Halifax annexed the mainland areas. BTW in '54 Joe Howe Dr did not exist - you had to drive all along Dutch Village Rd, Bayer's Rd was not there either. I remember when they put in the Dominion Store on Bayers Rd which later became Bayers Rd SC
Interesting picture

Here's a pic from a 1960s postcard showing what it looked like before they built the piece on the corner:

I absolutely love the look here. Given the era I can safely guarantee it wasn't the intention, but the juxtaposition between the old and new section reminds me of the Ulster Museum a bit.

I think that was originally Hugh Mclennan's house.

Nope, his house was on South Park Street, between the hotel and YMCA.

Very interesting thread. I was born in Halifax in '47 so I remember when sidewalks in the north end were made of cinders, I remember the bright red horse drawn fish wagons and the vendor yelling 'Mackeral, fresh mackeral'. I remember horse drawn milk wagons.
I remember crossing the harbor in a car on the ferry. There was quite a line up on the Dartmouth side one Sunday evening.
I remember the Armdale rotary before it was a rotary. There were lights and traffic backed up trying to get into the city.
I remember the Fairview UNDERPASS and also remember it flooding.
I remember the old original Simpsons store facing the railway tracks and how the trolleys circled at the south end of the store
I remember going to see Santa at Eaton's on Barrington St, and I remember Woods Bros having baby chicks in their store windows at Easter, I believe it was on Granville

Wasn't sure where to put John's article, but I thought here was as a good a thread as any:

DeMONT: There’s a sense of confidence in the air
John DeMont (jdemont@herald.ca)

Quote:
I’ve been reading the grim stuff about our prospects — that our population is old, our skill sets passé, our future woeful unless something dramatic happens — for so long that I almost missed the good news late last week: that, even if we’re not flourishing Ontario, vigorous Alberta or booming B.C., more folks than ever in history have found reason to make their homes between Freeport and Bay St. Lawrence.

Like our premier who tweeted breathlessly about those Statistics Canada population figures being “another positive sign that brings optimism for our future,” I felt like doing the chicken dance, like jumping up and chest bumping total strangers.

Even if, let’s be honest, close to half of that increase — from over 909,000 in 2013 to nearly 951,000 as of right now — is from people moving into Halifax, the province’s standalone city state where the living is said to be easy.

Now I’ve spent the majority of my working life right here. After all of this time I feel like I know Halifax about as well as a person can know a place.

But I do concede that there is also something to seeing a thing with fresh eyes, to being away from somewhere long enough that the changes that the years have brought are obvious.

My suspicion is that Halifax isn’t just the biggest it has ever been, but that it is also the best it has ever been, with caveats, in my lifetime.

But I fear that I may be too close to the story. So I decided to ask someone with the perspective that distance can bring.

Fortunately, I have just the guy.
