Socialist Canada does not have ghetto's.

Except for some Indian reserves, which nobody talks about.
I'd still rather go for a walk in the Canadian version than that American one. I've said it before, but I don't get a sense of fear at all in the Downtown Eastside, even at night. Especially at night, actually, as there's always lost of people on the street. The area can be depressing but it's not dangerous if you mind your own business.

Walking down east hastings was always kind of exciting for me, but i agree I never felt threatened because I minded my own business. I've seen some fucked up shit alright, but my safety was never jeaportized.

I think the real dangerous stuff happens in those rooming houses like the Balmoral hotel. Now, that I wouldn't go into unless I had a 12 guage and 100 rounds of ammo.

Queen and Sherbourne is Toronto's version of East Hastings, but it's less extensive in scope and seems a little less hopeless.

Ghettos are ETHNIC enclaves. St John's has only white people and as such has no "ghettos."

If you're talking about SLUMS, then talk about SLUMS.

Calgary has no slums.

That's one definition.

As an aside, St. John's isn't an entirely white city. I doubt any are in Canada these days. The percentage of visible minorities is certainly low (most of our recent immigrants have been European like our earliest non-aborigional settlers, the Spanish and Slavs being the ones numerous enough to stand out.) But the Indonesian community is expanding quickly, as is immigration from other Muslim countries.

Although ghetto is usually an area defined by race or ethnicity, it is also defined by economic disadvantage, overcrowding, and high crime rates. However, I think the term "projects", and not slums or ghettos, would apply more to the St. John's areas you have shown.

there are gay ghettos

kingston has the "student" ghetto - that was my faveourite part of kingston

i think ghetto usually refers to people of the same socio-group living en masse in one area

Ghettoes are not ethnic enclaves. They were originally segregated communities of relegated minorities. The only thing that meets this definition in Canada are the reserves.

Calgary has a ghetto: Tsuu T'ina Reserve.

This, friends and neighbors, is (was) the shittiest slum area in the USA. South Bronx. 1970s:

You would probably be better off minding your own business in the DTES, but I'm not sure you're in danger even if you engage people in a respectful manner.

I'm an average sized person, not intimidating looking really, not vulnerable looking either. I have talked to people on the streets of the DTES in the middle of the night, by myself, and have not had a problem. I have even talked to a few crack dealers. One dealer, a white guy right at Main and Hastings, not an extensive conversation but we talked about the olympics and how there were lots of tourists in the city. Then there was the time I talked to a young native guy with his native girlfriend around the Chinatown area - which most people would find scarier than right at Main and Hasting. Anyway, we're talking a little bit while I'm trying to flag a cab, then finally the young girl says to me, "You don't smoke crack do you". No, I replied. "Good", she softly exclaimed.

Sure there are some who are sizing you up and get some satisfaction if they can intimidate you, but that's usually as far as it will go. But when I talk to people in the DTES, even the dealers, they seem genuinely happy to have had even a small conversation. I guess because they are treated like garbage most of the time.

These are only my personal experiences and I am a bit of a risk taker sometimes, so it's probably not recommended that anybody should start engaging people in the DTES.

Yeah I've talked to a few people as well and have had positive experiences. Everybody has a story and there are many stories to be told.
The only time I've ever had a problem is when I've been taking photos. Some people don't like to see cameras and they wonder what you're taking photos of. No big deal, usually...

In Ottawa, Murray St. near King Edward around the homeless shelters looks terrible with all the homeless people hanging around. The general area is not a slum though.

A lot of Hamilton looks like the ghetto, but isn't really that bad.

Barton Street is very gritty:

So is Kenilworth Ave:

While it may not be bad enough to be referred to as Slums, the streetview of Forest Lawn I posted earlier definitely underscores the vast difference between an average Calgary neighbourhood and our worse areas.

I will get some pictures of Winnipeg's North End, then lets see what you say about East Hasting's being Canada's only ghetto. You can't really exclude the Violent Crime Capital neighbourhood of Canada when referring to ghetto's.

I'm betting that in about 10 years' time they will be the equivalent of today's Cavaliers, which seems to be an extremely common car in the poorer areas of London. The Chrysler Insipid and Chevy Venture (both with copious amounts of rust) are also popular choices.

London doesn't really have any crime-ridden slums per se, but there are areas of the city where people are noticeably worse off and where there is a noticeable increase in property crimes. One of these is Kipp's Lane: https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...47.12,,0,10.41

(Ironically, the street these townhouses are located on is called "Bridle Path")

A friend of mine lives in one of the tower blocks at Kipps Lane and Adelaide, according to his neighbours at least half the people in the area receive some form of government assistance. My friend also keeps his car in an open lot; an '01 Honda Accord, nothing fancy, but still it has been broken into 3 times in the past 2 years. Eventually he just started leaving his windows rolled down, because by his logic, it was cheaper to replace the trinkets people stole as opposed to replacing the whole window.

Ah, the 70s.When US cities actually had the realest ghettos in North America. Today, we're still in top, but it isn't as profound as before. All the Canadian "ghettos" I've seen here are basically rehashes of the areas I see around West Palm Beach and the rest of South Florida every day.

What I find amazing about this video is just how far gone New York was. Most of the country was probably ready to write it off at that point. It's interesting to see how the city got its act together and managed a complete turnaround; could this mean there is hope for Detroit?

New York never lost over half its population and most of its key industries.
