Wow. Looks like a little like a ship.

What a great time and condition to be taking the picture.

At its peak St. Thomas was an influential railway centre. It acted as a central location for a series of prominent railways and served as the primary stop on the Canadian shortcut between Detroit and Buffalo. By 1914 more than 100 trains passed through St. Thomas each day earning it the title of "The Railway Capital of Canada".

The railway had a tremendous effect in the shaping of St. Thomas. It brought jobs which in turn brought prosperity and population growth. Today, St. Thomas’s 36,000 person population is a testament to the railway’s influence.

Various museums and monuments dedicated to railway heritage give visitors the opportunity to delve into St. Thomas’s storied past. Attractions such as the annual "Day Out With Thomas", and the Port Stanley Terminal Rail train ride, provide interactive fun for the whole family! A local craft brewery and multiple vibrant railway themed festivals and events are sure to delight visitors of all ages, and no trip to St. Thomas is complete without a visit to the Jumbo monument to see the most famous elephant that ever lived!

Hope that helps!

In the early 20th century most trains were steam-powered. Coal, black smoke and soot everywhere, not to mention noisy.

Most of the old railyards are brownfield sites. These areas are very polluted and there isn't much money to clean them up.

Yep! If it was dt you would see the Lion's Gate Bridge and the Stanley Park Rainforest. You can basically observe the entire Lower Mainland from Cypress Mountain on a clear morning.

I love New West! The smallest big-looking suburb with the best historicism and urbanity you'll ever see in this country! Living there was awesome. Like living in a nice medium sized city like Regina, but with the amenities and opportunities of a city of 2.5 million.

Here's a shot I took of the Brentwood/University skyline a couple days ago from across the city. Not the greatest quality, but we were driving 100 kph on a somewhat bumpy road

new westminster and nycc are the only suburban "downtowns" that feel like legitimate downtowns.

It's cause New West really isn't a suburb, it was and is a legitimate city.
Certainly it has improved a lot since I was a kid, though it has a long way to go.
I am considering moving there myself in the next few months.

You should Red! It's a great place to live. It is only getting better too. The new Civic Centre Tower (Merchant's Square) will be adding a lot to the downtown too. Are they still planning on putting up the 4th tower at Plaza 88?

I believe so, but not sure when. There was talk of it in the Van forum a while ago.

I think I may go around Toronto for building and tower clusters The photos should be up in roughly two days.
