Sandbanks Provincial Parks has some amazing beaches as well. I've never been to Cobourg but I should drive the extra 45 min and check it out sometime.

I was there last year on a weekday during that late September heat wave - the beach was terrific, there was hardly anybody there, and the Monarch butterflies were migrating. It was amazing.

Martinique Beach (longest sandy beach in Nova Scotia around 5 km long and only a little more than 30 minutes from Halifax)

It's a good time to be a beach. One (maybe half) summer of piece and quiet.

Yeah, that last one looks spectacular. I had no idea there were beaches like that near Halifax/Dartmouth.

It's hard to live more than 10 minutes away from some kind of beach or swimmable lake in the Halifax area. It also works out pretty well since there's a period when the lakes are decently warm (June/July), then later in the season the ocean is warmer (August/September). Dartmouth proper is full of lakes, while Halifax has Chocolate Lake which has a beach that is a 15 minute bus ride from downtown and then many others farther out.

Another side-effect of the large number of these places is that if you want your own private spot you can easily find it. And waterfront property isn't all that expensive because there's a lot of it. Halifax is basically "cottage country" with a city built on it.

Halifax is also a year-round surfing spot believe it or not. You will see people out surfing in January in Lawrencetown.

Interesting. Beaches weren't on my radar at all when it comes to Halifax. I never sought out beaches on past visits so I guess I never gave myself a chance to be enlightened... if I gave it a second thought, I probably just assumed it was all rocky seashores around there.

I like Crystal Crescent (~25 min from Halifax). Though it's not nearly as long as the beaches on the Dartmouth side.

How warm does the water get in in Nova Scotia? I have to admit my only ocean swimming experiences are in Florida and the Caribbean. My dad swims almost daily year round in Porpoise bay Inlet in Sechelt but he's crazy and I know that water stays cold year round.

Beaches on the Northumberland shore (red sand) facing P.E.I will get into the mid-20s C in August.

Most of the bigger open beaches on the South and Eastern Shores near Halifax struggle to get to 20 C in August. There are some more shallow protected beaches that can get into the low 20s like Queensland in Hubbards.

Westboro Beach in Ottawa will be receiving major upgrades over the next few years, including a new-expanded pavilion.

The Dominion Transitway Station, a glorified bus stop, is currently about 600 meters away. The new O-Train Dominion Station, a proper rapid transit station, will be closer at about 500 meters, set to open in 2025.

Phase two, which will be reviewed at a later date, will accommodate the redevelopment of 745 Sir John A. The two phases together will provide a total of 110 vehicular parking spaces, 4 accessible parking spaces plus one van accessible parking space, and 60 bicycle parking spaces.

That looks great. I like that they're moving the existing parking lot across the street and expanding the park. I also love the idea of beaches (and similar recreation sites) accessible by public transit. Unfortunately you need a car to reach most beaches in the Halifax area.

Went to my favourite little beach a couple weekends ago - it may not look like much, but it's super shallow and extends out into the lake a few hundred metres and is bathwater-warm as a result (water level is high now, but even a few inches drop in lake level can extend the beach by several metres); it's over a kilometre in length; and is quiet and secluded (which is why I'm not going to say where it is ).
