It's amazing that everytime I walk the city, I still notice something new, and your thread was the same. Beautiful shots! Thanks!

Nice pictures! San Francisco definitely has a lot of great older buildings. And there's plenty of great old houses and little buildings in the neighborhoods, too.

Great shots. I agree with you. Old buildings have a lot more character than those modern colossuses (is that written well?), which doesn't mean that modern buildings can't be nice. But IMO modern buildings lack the beauty in general.

Even though this thread is damn near three years old, it's still a pleasure to look at.

^That's the beauty of shooting old buildings; 3 years later, they're still old!

nutty buddy - that made me laugh so much, I'm tempted to make it my screen name! That's the Phelan Building and it's right on Market. You've probably walked or ridden right by it but maybe just didn't see it from this angle?

Thanks for bringing this thread back to life, SanFranFan, and thanks everyone for the comments.

Wow, this is a fantastic thread. I haven't been to San Francisco but I've always assumed that it had that west coast southern/italian/spanish boring architecture dominate, but your thread has completely changed my mind. What an amazing architectural treasures there are in SF!

Hmm, I did not realise San Francisco had this level of Victorian era quality. Reminds me of my home city, Sydney.

Love the thread of old SF architecture! You should include photos of the Flood Building on Market near the Powell St cable car turnaround and the old PG&E HQ building in the Northern FiDi near Market and Pine. Those are old gems too. Oh, and how about the Mills Building on Montgomery - best Daniel Burnham (Chicago School) on the West Coast!

I wish gold would have been discovered there in the 16th century, then we could have a sick colonial Spanish city in America, that is if the US could have still gotten the territory.

The great earthquake would have destroyed it anyway.

Too bad SF lost so much of its 19th century heritage due to the earthquake and fire of 1906. BTW - I was in Pittsburgh for the first time last summer and was impressed with the city overall, but especially the beautiful old architecture downtown. Some very impressive tall towers built in the '20s and '30s!
