I think metro Chicago was more Democratic than metro NYC this time. Italian Americans swung towards Trump, while Chicago's suburbs are more traditional WASP Republican.

It seems that Staten Island, Suffolk and Ocean swung most heavily to Trump in the NY area.

And those counties tend to be filled with lots of working class Italians and similar ethnics. Often high earners, but more like tradesmen, police detectives, small business owners and the like, not lawyers and bankers and consultants.

Blue collar prosperity; guys who work with their hands and, for whatever insane reason, relate to Trump. Those counties are basically the descendants of white ethnic Brooklyn circa 1960.

NYC is more conservative than Los Angeles and Chicago.

The New York City suburbs are very conservative.

Staten Island is a borough, but it has a suburban-type feel.

SI, LI, parts of NJ are very insular. White Roman Catholic Italians are very insular (SI, Verona, Marlboro, Old Bridge) and they voted for Trump.

Putting aside the fact this narrative is all wrong, voting for Dotard has zero to do with Conservatism. He's a populist reactionary, not a Conservative. Conservatives are for preserving the status quo, fiscal discipline, applying traditional cultural norms, etc.

Also, I have no idea what you mean by "insular".

True.

He is not a conservative, but he is attached to conservatism.

Insular means provincial, closed off. A lot of these white suburbs are insular and closed off. (Verona, Cedar Grove, Bensonhurst, Eltingville, etc.)

They are also cop enclaves.

New York City isn't West coast liberal but it's pretty progressive compared to the rest of the state and other large cities. It's becoming more so. Used to be pretty centrist. Still. New York pumps out a lot of RWNJ.

LA is the definitely the least conservative of the three.

Hard to say between Chicago and New York.

If you are including the whole metro area then Chicago by a long shot is the most conservative.

Illinois is the poster boy of blue dot in the sea of red urban/rura divide.

Now if you are talking city itself? probably LA. It seems to be less lopsided politically.

I would go with NYC. Nothing about LA city is conservative including the white areas. Chicago has about the same white percentage as NYC, but this population is mostly modern wealthy progressive urbanites than NY. NY has this group in large numbers as well, but not quite like Chicago. The regular Joe and immigrant/religious whites are more prominent in NYC and are more likely to vote republican. Strangely, it seems the city where the most minorities vote republican are in LA, though still small in number.

I've lived in all 3 cities, and voting records aside and just going off the people i know and hearing their views, I would say Los Angeles is the most conservative. People here vote dem, but hold conservative views, especially in certain neighborhoods of LA (Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, Bel Air). NIMBYISM is stronger here in LA than in Chicago too, especially here on the westside of town. SoCal and NorCal are also different. LA definitely votes dem, but it isn't as progressive or liberal as SF/Bay area. LA still has some country to it, while NYC and Chicago don't

^ Thanks for posting those numbers.

so all 3 of these metros are among the top 10 MSAs in the nation in terms of voting democrat in the last presidential election.

i don't think the political differences between the 3 of them are that radically different.

Newsflash: Just because NYC didn't overwhelmingly support HILLARY does NOT, by any stretch of the imagination make it "more conservative" than LA or Chicago.

Chicago is the most conservative of the three, and when we're talking entire metros, it's not even close.

thank you for your informed opinion.

you actually lived in all 3 cities. i don't imagine there are many people who can make that claim.

your opinion is worth FAR more than the other yahoos in this thread mostly talking out of their ass.

Eh, I lived in LA and Chicago for many years now, and LA is more liberal than Chicago.

Not sure what "country" the other poster is referring to LA. Are you talking about the Inland Empire? Maybe. But that's true for Chicago's far out suburbs too.
I do remember visitors coming to visit me in Chicago and thinking the African American population felt way more country or southern compared to the northeast. I didn't hear those comments about LA's African American's population.
