Since you asked, here are a few photos showing work underway on the plaza in front of the new events centre in Moncton. Sorry for the small size (thumbnails), but you get the idea.

This shows the stage and the outdoor refrigerated skating rink on the plaza in the foreground. The events centre is to the left. In the background is the main federal government office complex in the city (partly under renovation). To the right is the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Stage again, the round concrete forms in the foreground are designed to anchor a large and elaborate trellis system for ivy and vines that will surround the outdoor rink.

This image nicely shows the relationship of the outdoor stage to the main entrance of the events centre.

It actually sounds stupid when i say it but even at a net worth of 1.21 billion I don't think he has the money to fund it. He will approach the city for public funds. The sens are as close to be run like an ahl team as it comes in the NHL from what ive heard. Everything is cheaped out on. How is this man gonna cough up north of 500M for a new arena?

Back to the Edmonton deal, they will damn near triple the investment in 20 years. This will not work in Calgary but Ottawa. Makes you wonder??

Quote:
The overall cost of Edmonton's arena project ended up being close to $614-million, which included the land, a connection to nearby light-rail transit, a community rink as well as the glass-covered Winter Garden located outside Rogers Place. The cost of the 18,347-seat arena was $480-million.

The funding details had team owner Daryl Katz contributing $166-million in cash and lease payments to the city, which owns Rogers Place. Mr. Katz agreed not to move the Oilers from Edmonton for 35 years. There is also a tax on Oilers' tickets that is expected to produce $125-million over 35 years.

The city is in for $313-million, with $231-million coming from a community revitalization levy and increased parking revenues. Property owners within the designated boundary are paying the same amount of tax they normally would, except the money is going towards repaying what was spent on infrastructure within the arena boundary.

In December, 2014, almost two years before Rogers Place officially opened, Edmonton announced the arena had prompted $2.5-billion in new development. In November, 2015, the city estimated the community revitalization levy would produce $984-million over its 20-year term. In September, 2016, the city noted the levy had already brought in close to $9-million. City officials said it was a good indication the plan was delivering as advertised.

No, net worth isn't cash in hand if that's what you mean. Financing a new stadium shouldn't be too difficult. It's just a lot of risk with little benefit.

It's about a mile and a half.

If the idea is to revitalize downtown by moving stuff from one area of downtown to another, I'm not sure that's a good use of money.

I guess you could argue that moving the Detroit Pistons downtown from the suburbs (Ann Arbor) might qualify.

Those empty grass fields right next to downtown are shocking. More so for Chicago.

Those "empty" grass fields are called parks in Chicago.

Toronto has them too.

As well as Calgary.

But in reality, the CoE had to come up with all but some $21 million up front with that $21 million be the amount Katz contributed up front.

The west grandstand at Taylor Field comes tumbling down this Friday. Won't lie, it's sad seeing it go down.

Wow. We are definitely in the dog days of Canadian arena and stadium building

His ownership of the Senators might not be lasting too much longer. If he sold his Senators holdings before the end of the year it would not be surprising.

Well, there certainly was a rash of new stadiums and arenas built in cities big and small over a span of about 20 years from roughly 1995-2015... probably not a whole lot that needs doing until those facilities start to age.

What new stadiums/arenas do we really need though?

The only ones I can think of McMahon in Calgary and (maybe) the Saddledome.

Every other NHL arena was built after 1994. I doubt Ottawa would be trying to replace theirs if it wasn't located in the boonies.

For major stadiums, I guess Olympic Stadium in Montreal. It has no tenant though, so I believe the focus will remain on just keeping up maintenance and not a replacement.

Skydome is going to be used for a long time given its location and the fact that it is now Rogers' problem.

BC Place just had a major renovation.

We really haven't shed much light on Place bell in laval. It screams "meh". Like Videotron in QC I find myself anticipating them stripping off the white film on the exterior to expose the final cladding. But no it's just white and bland, The interior is dark and nothing sets it apart but its a decent arena and will serve laval and canada just fine. So to you Laval I say...."meh, It's okay"

Laval Place is still a darn fine secondary arena for Montreal though. It seats 10,000 and will be one of the best, if not the best, AHL arena. The great thing about its size is that it is just big enough to host concerts for semi-big to big acts. Ie. the Killers will play or have played there. That will come in handy when the Bell Centre is booked for other concerts or the Habs.

^ I like Place Bell, it's a nice looking arena. Very nice modern style. It looks impressively large too... it looks roughly on par with a typical 70s or 80s NHL arena.

It's interesting to see how far the AHL has come in the last 25 years or so when it comes to arenas... for example, until the early 90s, this rink housed the Leafs' AHL affiliate:
