Fort "Funkytown" Worth

Starting out in the cultural district. We have 6 museums, in this little area. 3 of them focus on art and all have well known architects, the Modern (Tadao Ando, postwar art) The Kimbell (Louis Kahn and Renzo Piano, prewar art) and the Amon Carter (Phillip Johnson, American art)

Across the way is the Iconic Will Rogers center, which contains a theater, tower and an arena connected together. Built 1936.

The Botanic Gardens are also in the area, which has many scenic area. My favorite remains the Japanese Gardens area though.

To the North of downtown is another popular tourist destination, the Stockyards. It retains much more of the wild west feeling and is full of bars, steakhouses, entertainment and other retail. Admittedly, I don't spend much time here as it's not really my "thing"

To downtown now. Downtown Fort Worth is pretty much defined by Sundance Square, but there is quite a bit more. Sundance is where the majority of the retail and entertainment is.

The plaza itself, truly the heart of the city now.

Overlooking the plaza is the Burk Burnett building, built 1914.

A block away is our fraternal twin tower, Paul Rudolph's city center towers.

Despite appearing dated, not one of these buildings was built before 2002. All were done by David Schwarz who's work is very prominent in Sundance.

At the northern edge of downtown is a large bluff which the Trinity River runs through. Bing Thom's County College is built into this and overlooks the northside and future Panther Island.

The former T&P rail station, still a train station that runs to Dallas, but now condos on upper floors.

Burnett Plaza is Fort Worth's tallest building. Polarizing in design for sure, more dislike it than like it. It's interesting.

great photos. so much to love about ft. worth. and you didnt even get into the montgomery plaza redevelopment, the bass performance center facade, the original convention center ufo saucer bldg and the water gardens.

Yep, I'm certainy missing dozens of landmarks. I've posted several of them before. Some day I'll make a comprehensive phototour of the whole city.

awesome pics. i've enjoyed living here so far; fort worth has the bones of a big city in its own right even as being the secondary node to dallas.

i work at gmf and i'm heading to burnett monday for the first time, at a floor apparently near the top. definitely going to try to sneak a pic or two.

Cool photos. We had some good Dallas photo threads on here too. This area of Texas features some good modern buildings, but I think people are starving for friendly things like this too.

That some call "human scale", if that even means anything. It just feels cosy like medieval European districts. Urban planners should think about developing tiny narrow alleys like this again.

yep, there is a place for that. its happening here and there in new construction. in nyc they fixed up extra place for just this type of thing. in cleveland they are talking about developing melbourne-style laneways for the new nucleus development. etc.

Funkytown, Cowtown, Where The West Begins...what ever you wanna call it, Fort Worth is truly an inspiring city where even its big brother Dallas could learn a thing or two about how to create a vibrant urban center & rebuilding along the Trinity River.

Nice, thanks. Is that undeveloped land right behind downtown? Not familiar at all with DFW.

It's one of the nicest public squares in North America IMO. It does come even more alive at Christmas. It's a fantastic place.

Shot with a gopro! It was half submerged, then I used some software to edit out the fisheye affect.

Sundance is pretty nicely designed in a more warm and comfortable setting. There are some great parts to it. I do wish more alleyways looked like this one though, it's pretty much the only one.

It is nice, I hope to see more cities develop these corridors. They are really fun to explore and dine in.

The Trinity River Vision and Sundance Sqaure have really changed a lot about the mindset about both of those things here. People are really embracing both the core and the river more and more these days.

Pretty much, that's looking east towards Dallas, right behind downtown is a mess of train tracks and freeways, which turns into a mess of parks and levee's due to the river, which turns into some dilapidated old neighborhoods.
