Kinda cool reconstruction of historic houses on a formerly surface parking lot. Would have liked to see them front the sidewalk rather than having that stupid, useless strip of lawn there

Erie Insurance is ready to unveil six new rental units near East Fifth and German streets, a project that involved restoring two historic homes and constructing two new buildings.

The Fortune 500 company plans a ribbon-cutting Thursday morning. The apartments are the first new housing units constructed by Erie Insurance on nearly 12 acres the city of Erie agreed to rezone for the company in 2017.

The company acquired the parcels over several years. Rents for the units range between $890 and $1,700 per month, Erie Insurance officials said, and one unit has been rented thus far.

The project relocated two historic homes that Erie Insurance wanted to restore. One is the Von Buseck house, originally located on the south side of West 38th Street between Asbury and Millfair roads as part of a 100-acre farm built in the 1830s by Friedrich Von Buseck, a German immigrant, and his wife, Rachel Weigle.

The Von Buseck house contains two one-bedroom apartments.

The second property, known as the Judah Colt house, was built in 1820 at the corner of East Fourth and French streets. Judah Colt was the first land agent for the Pennsylvania Population Co., and entertained the Marquis de La Fayette, the French and American patriot, in this house in 1825 during La Fayette’s return to the U.S. after the Revolutionary War.

Judah Colt’s nephew, Thomas G. Colt, served as Erie’s first mayor in 1851. The Colt house contains two apartments, each with two bedrooms.

Hate the burnt orange paint job... ugly and so 2008. What's the attraction architects have to this awful color?

ULI strategic study on economic development, urban design, land economics, and specific development options for the for the EDDC footprint in downtown Erie.

Focuses on adding 700 new residential units and 200k sqft commercial space to Lower Downtown blocks bordering State Street, clsoing State Street to vehicular traffic through Perry Square, and building a free tram line up and down State Street from the Bayfront south to 14th Street.

Yeah, it would be great to see happen... I'm not going to hold my breath though.

The idea is for those stupid fake trolleys (which Erie already has) to run the State Street route for a trial planning period, and then build a light rail line running down the center of State Street, connecting the Union Station/Union Square development area at 14th Street to the Bayfront.

This is a good thing. The upper floors of the 1840s Exchange Building and adjacent buildings (red brick buildings) have been largely vacant or just used as storage space. And the buildings need some work. I imagine that the upper floors will be developed into luxury apartments. The buildings on the right side of the photo were renovated years ago.

Been waiting for this area to get started. The old Gen Tire Store has plenty of parking for say maybe a Flower shop, Tobacco store and a bakery. Could be a nice commercial spot with a lot of traffic.

Gannon University in downtown Erie to spend @ $20 Million on 2 new Cyber Security programs and to repurpose the 100,000 sq ft 6 story Knight Tower.
The former Verizon call center was purchased by Gannon University as a temporary library while GU's main library was undergoing a $ 17M complete rehab.

Now moving in.

Early stages of UMPC Hamot Hospital's 8 floor $115M addition underway.

Gannon University's announced new Cyber Center

Just about 10 blocks south of downtown St Vincent's Hosp $125 new

$2M addition to the Hagen History Center

Officials held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday at Hagen History Center campus.

The Erie County Historical Society’s rapidly expanding Hagen History Center campus at 356 W. Sixth St. in downtown Erie is about to launch another construction project.
Historical Society officials on Friday morning held a groundbreaking ceremony for their planned two-story, 6,000-square-foot exhibit center, which will be constructed on the campus and located in front of the society’s archives building and adjacent to the Carriage House.
The project, which is expected to begin within a week, carries a $2 million price tag, Historical Society Executive Director George Deutsch said.
Society officials hope to have the building finished in spring 2020. Kidder Wachter Jefferys Construction is the general contractor.

Interesting how many smaller PA cities are using minor league baseball teams in revitalization plans. Allentown and Lancaster too if I remember correctly.

Not a major project but what's important is the investment in a 120 yr old bldg. downtown. The PACA ( Performing Artists Collective Alliance ) Bldg is getting new widows
installed. The 5 story 70,000 sq ft bldg. has been slowly filling up and being renovated.
Good move to remove boarded up windows.
