In terms of classic architecture only, I think Yale has the best campus in the U.S.

Yales campus is definitely one of the two most beautiful campuses I've seen. I love its tightly packed urban feel and all the architectural masterpieces are amazing; but there are lots of locked gates that, while necessary to separate the riff raff and tourists from the students in situ, contribute to an ivory tower feel. Leafy Princeton situated next to that wonderful little village is the perfect college/college town.

this is just stunning to see. it looks like they bricked over concrete shells. is that so? and are those real bricks? i don't see any brick laying shots.

Yale opted to protect its cultural property here. The interesting thing is that no matter how progressive the values of its members and students are in such institutions, they often tend to favor maintaining architectural tradition and sense of place, sometimes in opposition to the administrations in charge of campus developments. Tying progressivism and modernism/internationalism is an idea that belongs in the past.

i certainly agree in general, but not in every case. for example, oberlin campus is a stunning architectural showcase with styles of all eras.

The historical detail in these structures is exquisite, but it was a Robert A.M. Stern project, so I'm not surprised. Still impressed though.

yeah stern was definately the right choice here. for a modern take on classical design he's our guy.

It looks like some of it was hand laid brick, some was prefabricated to keep costs down, like these vaulted ceilings:
