^I am hoping the pump house will be called 'the pump house bar and grill" or something and have a cantilevered patio over the river.

When does the bid stage close. I just hope the province can get around to deciding one way or the other on funding this thing.

Expo 2017 represents huge opportunity for city
But beware of hustlers looking to cash in on fair

Todd Babiak
Edmonton Journal

Wednesday, October 06, 2010

We could soon learn the federal government will support Edmonton's Expo 2017 bid.

This will free up $2 billion to $3 billion when we beat contenders Liege, Belgium and Astana, Kazakhstan. Rumours are trickling out of Ottawa, none of them confirmed by Heritage Minister James Moore's office or the bid leadership in Edmonton. Still, it strains the mind to imagine any reasonable objection to supporting our bid...

EDMONTON — Premier Ed Stelmach said his government is pushing Ottawa to help fund a 2017 Expo in Edmonton, but time is running out to receive an answer.

Federal support is considered crucial for the city to make a legitimate bid to the International Exhibitions Bureau, which is also hearing pitches from Liege, Belgium, and Astana, Kazakhstan...

A three member delegation from Edmonton is on its way to Paris France to participate in Expo 2017 discussions.

There were worries earlier this week, that Edmonton would miss the boat because of a lack of federal support for the bidding process.

However, Alberta Tourism Minister Cindy Ady confirms her deputy minister is part of the trio that will take part in networking and business meetings of the International Exhibitions Bureau, which eventually will decide which city hosts 2017.

It's expected Edmonton will formalize its bid, and officially enter the race in the fall of 2011.
Fall of 2011? Doesn't leave much time to get stuff built.

4 1/2 years should be more than enough time given the scale of the fair. This isn't Shanghai Expo the city is applying to host.

Feds overdue in throwing support behind Expo 2017 bid

David Staples
Edmonton Journal

Friday, November 19, 2010

Alarm is growing in Edmonton that it's taking so long for Stephen Harper's government to get behind the city's bid for Expo 2017.

Local developer Randy Ferguson, who is on the Expo bid committee, expected to see federal backing by late September 2010. "I've worried ever since, and my worry has increased through the month of October, and now into November my worry has become alarm," he says. "I'm deeply alarmed."..

True, but 3 new LRT lines, a massive new bridge, rossdale lands, essentially a new campus...

this city will be in overdrive!!!

Only the campus and rossdale lands are what I would call core to the bid, the rest while it would be nice to have done by then I would guess maybe 1 of the LRT lines and the new bridge which while wide unless it has changed a lot I wouldn't call massive will be done.

Expo doesn't mean extra funds for LRT or the bridge from the feds, just for Expo site things, and maybe the flourishes like the site linking water taxi/bus.

Massive in terms of realignment and associated work as well as the bridge.

The feds have to back this thing. We have to at least be given a chance to even try.

Though I think it's unlikely they will decline, I also wouldn't be too shocked if they didn't back it. Our government and politics lack ambition and vision, so this would be another line in our Canadian script.

The last Toronto expo bid failed due to financial problems with the feds methinks and I think the amount budgeted for what I believe was a full expo was less than what Edmonton has budgeted today less than a decade later.
