UAE architectural firms still strong in home market

By Nicole Walter, Senior Reporter
Published: 00:00 October 22, 2010

The new Saudi Stock Exchange (Tadawul) designed by Nikken Sekkei. The 42-storey project has a value of $267 million.

Quote:
The firm has a lot of work in Qatar and Saudi Arabia. "We're content to have weathered the storm relatively well and transferred our personnel from Dubai to Saudi Arabia and Qatar," Charles added.

Saudi Arabia also plays a prominent role for architectural firm Nikken Sekkei, which recently won the design contract for the Saudi Stock Exchange, a 42-storey project with a value of $267 million (Dh980 million).

"We won an international design competition in February for it," said Fadi Jabri, architect and general manager, Nikken Sekkei, Dubai.

"The client then wanted us to fine-tune the design, now we have the final approval and construction will start next year.

"In general most of our work is now in Saudi Arabia and we're getting a lot of enquiries from Oman, Iran, Kuwait, Egypt, Libya and Morocco."

I'm not sure what are the numbers of all of the individual buildings.

It is an area of approximately 7 square kilometres in the heart of Riyadh and there are plans to erect approximately 50 high-rise, multi use buildings by 2015. The district will be truly multi cultural, environmentally sympathetic and fully inclusive.

Working in joint venture with the manufacturer AdArt Medyan Signs of Riyadh, we have been resolving the complex issues surrounding the signage scheme for these buildings. Each building must be different, but all must be high quality, utilise a diverse range of materials and be linked by their communication style and content.

The processing, drawing, negotiation, submission and approvals involved in the construction design surrounding these multiple projects in the initial phase of packages has been a complex task. The communication issues involved between client, main contractor, client’s design consultants, main contractor’s design consultants and suppliers have been further complicated due to differing time zones, locations and languages.

With U.S. and U.K. designers specifying materials and processes unavailable or unheard of in Saudi Arabia we have been given great challenges to rework and adapt specifications to still meet with the client’s aspirations and yet be manufactured, on the whole, locally.

The signage is now being manufactured for the first buildings and our role in Riyadh will be to continue with the same process of construction and design prototyping as further works packages progress.

Whoa. It looks like the future. And, surprisingly, the architecture is very nice. Not ugly and flashy like Dubai, but cool, sleek, modern, and maybe even a little understated. And a monorail! If anything could complete that 22nd century look, a monorail could.

Though, I did notice, you have a high-end shopping mall with a jagged, angular design called "The Chrystal". Now, where have I seen that before?

Hmmmm....

Oh, that's right! It's literaly the exact same thing as The Chrystals, a Daniel Libskind designed high-end mall in Las Vegas, down to the name. Well, at least the other dozen buildings look great.
