I am pretty sure the Pet Traders on 1333 Portage Avenue (Portage and Valour) was a Safeway in the 50s. That is a pretty small store (though at the time seemed spacious enough) and was in later years a Tom Boy. A short hop east on the 800 block of Portage (surprisingly close) was another Safeway, though larger but still far from a megastore, recently Harry's Foods but now a Food Fare. This style was similar to the Safeway originally on Portage and Ferry Road. I recall green porcelain ribbed panels on these. That location was torn down and rebuilt with more parking to accommodate 60s lifestyle and is now rejigged as several stores and various other shops gobbling up the parking lot. That may have been a marina style though A.I.R. they may have squared off the roof after Safeway left there. This is all from memory so if anyone has access to old telephone books they can double check.

Me too. I have attempted to source the round post with ball top with no success (please don't advise buying a screw on ball and screwing it to the top of a post as the scale is all wrong). I am at the point where I may have to build some kind of giant lathe and DIY it.

There used to be a lot of grocery stores. I remember when I was very small we used to shop at the Tom Boy that was replaced by the Autopac Claims Centre on St. Mary's Road. I think that was my first experience with a familiar building disappearing, so somehow it stuck in my mind.

Lots of grocery stores and gas stations. The old Payfair at St. Mary's and Coniston is a Spirited Music now. At one time there were 3 gas station on the other corners, with another up the road where the Robin's is now. Used to be a Safeway at the junction of St. Anne's and St. Mary's too. CKND/Global was the last user of that building.

it is interesting that the petro canada that was demolished to make way for upperfortgarryland was the site of the first gas station in winnipeg....maybe they should rebuild a replica of the original and give interpretive tours of that as well.

There should be a government funded Polo Park Museum. It was the first indoor mall in western Canada and people need to know Winnipeg's place in the development of retail.

There should be a whole gallery dedicated to its humble begining as an outdoor shopping centre.
