Calgary's largest construction project and Balzac

a short thread!

The Calgary International Airport YYC is expanding and adding a new runway, a new international terminal, another hotel, a new control tower, and parking. In conjunction with this work, the City of Calgary has built a tunnel under the new runway for access from the northeast part of the city.

directly north of the airport, there is construction everywhere - here a Hilton, a Hampton and a something else...

Calgary has become a hub for western Canada for warehousing, distribution, logistics

Balzac is a former hamlet north of Calgary in the Municipal District of Rockyview. It is strategically situated just north of YYC at the junction of the new Stoney Trail north bypass and the QE2 highway to Edmonton.
There is a large outlet mall which opened a couple of years ago that has been very successful and Walmart and Target have built huge distribution centres here. The whole area is rapidly becoming a hot area for commercial real estate, but not for housing. The City of Calgary refuses to provide water and sewage treatment to what is essentially a parasitical growth on the unicity. One of Canada's fastest growing cities, Airdrie, is directly north of Balzac on the QE2. They don't provide Balzac with water and sewage either as they are tied into the Calgary system. Cross Iron Mills mall (BassPro and adjacent Costco and Lowes) gets its water from the Red Deer river via a pipeline.

The Bow is barely visible on the left. I was probably about 20-25 kms away from downtown.

Thanks for sharing, even if it's just the airport, lots of construction cranes shows that Calgary will continue to change, and there is no stopping in sight.

The Nexen Gas plant is decommissioning. One of the challenges will be to be how to dis assemble the tall stacks. Apparently the bricks contain asbestos.... so explosives are out of the question.

Calgary is definitely moving up. Per the Bow, it's a terrific skyscraper. Seattle's shelved Foster skyscraper is showing some signs of coming back to life. The Bow is a tough act to follow. Happy city-building!

Reminds me so much of Denver. I need to get up there someday.
