It would be nice if they had more room to work with for the airport...

That would be a really nice plot for new terminals, another runway, etc...

Great

1. The airport design is beautiful. The YouTube video is a great visual advertisement for New Orleans and the new airport.

2. I remember hearing Billy Martin narrate Damn Yankees at the Orpheum while the symphony played the musical. Glad to hear the building is going to be used again for what it's best at. It was sometime in the 1980s after Martin had been fired (again) as the Yankee manager.

The airport NEEDS a rail line into the city from the airport. Light or heavy, doesn't really matter.

CANAL ST. RUBY SLIPPER TO OPEN THIS WEEK

Posted Monday, January 20th, 2014 by NoDef Staff

The owners of the Ruby Slipper are expanding their booming breakfast business to a fourth location. Owners Eric and Jennifer Weishaupt began in Mid-City in 2008, then the CBD in 2010, and they brought brunch to Burgundy in the Marigny in November of 2012. Their location at 1005 Canal St. is opening this Friday.

Ruby Slipper serves breakfast all day long, as well as lunch items. Some of their most popular dishes include the Migas (Tex-Mex egg scramble) and the BBQ shrimp and grits.

KERMIT RUFFINS RE-OPENS ERNIE K-DOE'S MOTHER-IN-LAW LOUNGE

Posted Monday, January 20th, 2014 by M.D. Dupuy

The colorful building still bears Ernie K-Doe's name, but Kermit Ruffins is the new owner of the Seventh Ward's Mother-in-Law-Lounge (1500 N. Claiborne Avenue). Ruffins officially reopened the club Monday afternoon, and regulars of the past, along with many new faces, came to show their support.

Ernie K-Doe died in 2001, and his wife Antoinette K-Doe ran the business until she passed away in 2009. Antoinette K-Doe's daughter Betty Fox tried to keep the spot up and running, but eventually shut the club down in 2010. Once his plans for the building were secure, Ruffins earned the City Council's approval to reopen the lounge in 2012.

Preservationists nervously watching plans for Old Mandeville historical landmark hammered by Hurricane Katrina

If Mandeville had a landmark in the 1880s when it served as a summer resort for the upper crust of New Orleans, it was likely a stylish hotel on the shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain owned by Edmond Frapart and his wife Rosy Levy. Boasting a restaurant, a large hall for dancing and well-appointed rooms cooled by lake breezes, historians say Frapart's hotel was the site of annual summer soirees and was the social center of what was then a quaint waterfront village of tree-shaded cottages.

In the fall of 1894, creditors assumed control of the property from a debt-ridden Frapart and the hotel and its surroundings ended up in the possession of Douglas Anderson and his wife. Ten years later, the property and buildings were donated to a relatively-new New York-based charitable organization called the International Order of the King's Daughters and Sons, who for nearly a century operated the complex as the Rest Awhile, a retreat for underprivileged single mothers, their children and orphans.

Mayor Landrieu and NORA announce Façade RENEW program for commercial buildings in four targeted areas

JANUARY 21, 2014
NEW ORLEANS – Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu and the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority (NORA) announced the launch of NORA’s Façade RENEW Program, a grant program designed to incentivize commercial property and small business owners to revitalize storefronts and building façades in four targeted areas of the city.

The program will make a total of $1 million in one-time, matching grants available to commercial property and business owners to upgrade and preserve historic integrity of their buildings. Façade RENEW will initially target the following areas:

Bayou Road between North Broad Street and Esplanade Avenue
Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard between Calliope Street and Jackson Avenue
St. Claude Avenue between Mandeville Street and Franklin Avenue
St. Claude Avenue between Congress Street and Poland Avenue
“For nearly four years, eliminating blight and revitalizing of our commercial corridors have been top priorities in my administration,” Mayor Landrieu said. “We’ve exceeded our 2014 goal of reducing the blight in New Orleans by 10,000 units and we’re doubling down in our efforts to bring more properties into compliance and restore the vitality of our neighborhoods.”

Mayor Landrieu, City and State Officials celebrate grand opening of new Office of Motor Vehicles in New Orleans East

JANUARY 21, 2014
NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu joined Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Stephen Campbell and City and State officials to celebrate the grand opening of the new Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) located in the Lakewood Plaza Shopping Center at 7500 Bullard Avenue in New Orleans East.

“We are committed to rebuilding New Orleans East and delivering on our promise to restore critical services and shopping options to the neighborhood. Our residents will now be able to access essential services at the new Office of Motor Vehicles without having to drive miles across town or outside of our city,” Mayor Mitch Landrieu said.

Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Stephen Campbell said, “The Office of Motor Vehicles is proud to be a part of the continued revitalization of New Orleans. The office will provide much needed additional service to our New Orleans East customers.”

Kenner mayor touts plan for entertainment district

Kenner Mayor Mike Yenni is launching an ambitious plan to revamp the city’s Laketown that would turn the sparse park, pier and boat launch into an entertainment district potentially anchored by the Treasure Chest casino.

The proposed project, still in the early conceptual stages, would amount to a significant overhaul of the recreation area on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain.

It was a highlight of Yenni’s State of the City address Tuesday to the Kenner Professional Business Association.

A video that accompanied Yenni’s speech sketched out a vision for Laketown that includes a boardwalk area with rides and multistory developments with patios overlooking the lake and a marina.

“If anyone says Kenner can’t be a destination, they frankly don’t know what they’re talking about,” Yenni said.

City officials are in discussions with Boyd Gaming, which owns the Treasure Chest, to determine how the lake-based casino would fit into the larger plan. The city has also crafted a request for proposals to seek developers interested in building the project.

Martin Wine Cellar on Baronne will reopen in the fall

Martin Wine Cellar vows to finally return to its Uptown Baronne Street location by Sept. 15, reports Uptown Messenger. Owner Cedric Martin revealed the target date for the deli and wine shop Tuesday (Jan. 21) to the Delachaise Neighborhood Association. Construction on the site, which was razed after Katrina, will begin after Mardi Gras.

After the storm, a much smaller Martin Wine Cellar without a deli opened at 3500 Magazine St. A call to Martin Wine Cellar about the fate this location was not immediately returned.

SOMD seems to be moving awful slowly?

The new Martin's is sexy. Love it.

Glad you posted about the facade improvement program. Although I am generally against the government handing individual businesses grants/loans/reimbursements in this manner, I have seen this work very well in other cities. Plus, it improves all the neighboring properties, and tax revenues through improved assessments, so the city gets its money back in several ways. Glad to see commercial corridors continue to improve!

Seems like they have only added half a floor in the weeks since your last pics. I may be wrong though.

From watching similar projects in DC it seems like they put up a floor a week or so. Either way, it's progressing which is good.

I think that average pace is the same in all democratic societies.
Even over here where an average day work is yet slightly shorter than in the US.
So our good workers are productive. They deserve their resting time.

Im sure that the intention.. especially if they included the picture above. Also, since they are applying for historic tax credits they may not have a choice and have to do it. Either way it will look alot better so Im sure they are on the phone with whoever did the Saengers already!

Historic Baronne St. Building Will Be Event Space

3901 Baronne St. pre-renovation/photo via Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans
The old New Orleans Bicycle Club headquarters, an Uptown building from the 1890s, is getting some love in the form of a much-needed restoration from Cedric Martin of Martin Wine Cellar. The Uptown Messenger reports that Martin plans to eventually turn the Baronne Street structure into an event space with a kitchen. Crumbling and proposed for demolition in 2010 (but now rocking a shiny new paint job), the entire third floor had to be rebuilt before the roof could even be touched. First on Martin's to-do list, though, is his site across the street — rebuilding the adored Wine Cellar in its original location, which should be open by September.

Let's also hope that's they recreate it faithfully. I've seen some "restored marquee" that turn out looking like Disneyland garbage, like the whole ability to design an authentic period looking marquee has been lost.

Have you seen the Saenger marquee a block away? Very period-accurate.

Monument to segregation will get new life
http://www.fox8live.com/story/245005...l-get-new-life
Quote:
New Orleans, La. -
NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - It is a monument to the Jim crow segregation laws Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. fought to defeat.

But thanks to a big cash infusion, the old Carver theatre in the heart of Treme is about to enter a new chapter and could help rebuild a part of the city at the same time.

It's been 30 years since some of the giants of the music industry performed at the Carver theatre.

Sam Cooke would go to the Carver after performing for white audiences only at the Blue Room.

"They would come and perform some bootleg shows so blacks could come enjoy the performance," said Carver manager Vincent Sylvain.

The Carver was built 63 years ago for African Americans in the days of segregation.

In grade school, Irma Thomas came in second in a talent contest for singers.

"She didn't win," said Sylvain. "I want to see who won first place."

Now, thanks to an $8 million facelift, the Carver is about to re-open with a new mission.
