Sacramento - Soccer Specific Stadium - Downtown Railyards

Photos taken from the Sacramento Republic FC site.

The MLS commissioner left today "very impressed" and has been reported a decision on expansion in Sacramento could come as early as December.

Everything seems to be in place.

-Strong ownership
-Land
-Stadium Plan
-Private Funding
-Fanbase
-Political Support

I don't see how they can give it to Minnesota, Vegas, or San Antonio over us.

It won't be Vegas or SA. Just forget about that.

It's us versus Minny....I think we come out on top overall (especially with the MLS specific stadium plan), but they have a bigger population than us. I'm not sure how much weight that is.

Aw but we have a much larger Hispanic population, not only in the Sacramento area but in the CV. I wonder whether if having a team in San Jose makes Sac less or more appealing?

Aw but we have a much larger Hispanic population, not only in the Sacramento area but in the whole CV. I wonder whether or not having a team in San Jose makes Sac less or more appealing? Or if it matters in the least?

More appealing because from what I understand MLS likes close rivalries.

True. And they'll probably enhance the rivalry with something like the annual aggregate Wheat and Wafers Cup or something.

I think the fact that the MLS team is in San Jose, rather than SF or Oakland, makes a Sacramento team more appealing. If the MLS team in the Bay Area was in San Francisco and known as the San Francisco Earthquakes(probably not the name they'd go with for obvious reasons) or whatever, they would have much more of a presence in the Bay Area and Northern California, and would make Sacramento's chances a little weaker. The San Jose team from my understanding hasn't marketed itself much outside of Silicon Valley and has had a hard time establishing in the rest of Bay Area and Northern California. Definitely a good thing for Sacramento, and being this way, can make Sacramento more on even footing if they are to join the league, and they could even creep into the Bay Area in terms of fan base/loyalty.

It would be like if the Golden State Warriors were instead the San Jose Warriors and presence mostly in the South Bay, the Kings would probably have a bigger reach down into the north bay for fans.

Regardless, will be interesting, and I"m hoping Sacramento gets and MLS team because I think putting that stadium in the railyards will be huge to get that entire area up and running and only aid the urban core growth more.

Go Republic!

MLS Denies Sacramento Expansion

After five year of being strung along, Major League Soccer has again awarded
another city a franchise. The winner yesterday was St. Louis and their
scheduled to kick off in a new downtown stadium is 2022. At this point,
Sacramento appears to be used as leverage against other cities also wanting
a franchise. There is steep price to join the league, in April the expansion fee
went up to $200 million which many have forced the Sacramento investors to recalibrate?

Chill out man, did you even read the article you posted? Where does it say it denied Sacramento anything? Stop with your made up click bait titles.

Quote:
It was only last January, when Nagle was willing to cede control to California private equity investor Ron Burkle, that Republic became a truly viable MLS candidate. Then in April, the league jacked up the expansion fee to $200 million. That forced Burkle—a meticulous and thorough businessman and negotiator, according to sources—to recalibrate. Conversations with the league continued, and it’s believed that most of, if not all, the hurdles have been cleared. Sacramento’s wait should be ending soon.
Youre being overy dramatic about nothing. Sacramento is still on track for an expansion bid.

To deny: refuse to give or grant (something requested or desired) to (someone).

This was suppose to be a sure thing a couple years ago, but here we are. The confidence
of those that think this is locked in is mind boggling, how can you believe anything these
people say. You should watch their actions and not what they say.

It's not about MLS not wanting Sacramento, it's about billionaires Ron Burkle and Kevin Nagle and other investors and the league arguing over who pays what and who makes X amount of money and what percentage of profit goes here or there and what clause is there if the team loses money etc. etc. etc.

From what I've heard Kevin Nagle has really bumbled and messed up the process, but now that Ron Burkle is involved it should be more of a sure thing.

Burkle is known as a really tough negotiator.

I suspect that is playing a big part in what seems like this endless delay.

They havent denied Sacramento anything. There were multiple expansion spots open and Sacramento is in line for one of them.

If Sacramento is to play in the 2022 season , do think that we would hear from MLS soon to start construction?

They would need about 2 years to build, and the MLS season starts in March so.. sometime getting the ball rolling this winter would be good planning.

You sir sure take this personal? I have said several times on the forum I hope
Sacramento can pull it off, but after three years of delays, I have my doubts.
Just like everything else proposed in this city… show me.

The problem is you erroneously editorialized the title of the article. Then you made it worse by trying to backup your editorialization with some weird semantics game.
