I was walking today in that area around 5 p.m. It's getting quite dense in that area.

So when they designed this building were they trying for the Ugly award? Prefab at it's (near) worst. Rather have the empty lot and wait for a decent building.
Design police signing off.......

Thank you and you are so right. The color is disgusting, what is with this brown stucco facade we keep seeing on a lot of these hotels that should be in El Paso than in Austin. Its ugly and I have never liked that look. Austin needs to get away from those brown colors, we have too many of them as it is.

It's pretty darn close to that now. Prefab slabs of tan/brown crap.
I will say one thing.
It makes a lovely companion for the Hampton Inn! LOL!
Two turds in a row!

This is a neat article on tower cranes. It mentions the crane at the Hyatt is 240 feet tall.

Slideshow: A peek at Austin’s construction cranes

Austin Business Journal by James Jeffrey
Date: Friday, July 6, 2012, 12:47pm CDT

James Hernandez and Paul Leaman are crane operators working on the 285-foot crane northeast of Brazos and East Third streets and the 240-foot tower crane at San Jacinto Boulevard and East Third Street in downtown Austin.

Four years working on an aircraft carrier, including travel to Hong Kong and Dubai, introduced 31-year-old Hernandez to high-rise cities built by tower cranes.

“I love it, though it’s not for everyone with the height and winds,” he said. “You’re always concentrating,” particularly to avoid hurting the many workers below.

Due to two cranes working in proximity — their tips pass within 6 to 8 feet of each other — operators communicate via radio to coordinate each crane’s movements. Camaraderie among operators is one of many satisfying elements of a job high above the city.

It topped out last Thursday and I got downtown this afternoon to get a few shots of it. It's got quite a bit of the glass hung on the East side. I was really hoping that the glass would help the looks of this building but so far I'm not sold. I guess I'll have to wait until it's finished.

Thanks for the picture update Corvairkeith. I think I'm finally coming around with the color schemes. Your first shot facing south with the buildings lined up sold me. Because of the density and with the morning sun, that section will be bright and inviting on a pedestrian level and not dark and shadowy and Gotham like if a darker color pallet had been chosen and especially if the east side of the street gets built up. Almost seems Miami like. I hope they line the street with trees, maybe even palms. BTW, I had a Corvair a long time ago, took it off road, hit a tree stump which stopped me dead in my tracks and caused the engine to fall out. If I recall, they didn't have engine mounts. Thank God they don't make 'em like that anymore...

I agree that the new density is really looking great! It's a really nice thing to see, even if the Hyatt itself leaves something to be desired. On the plus side, it fits in with the Hampton next door and kind of helps it not stand out as such an eyesore, though it always will be. But now less so.

I have updated heights for Hyatt Place. The heights that I'd gotten from the developer were being measured from another side of the building at a place where the street elevation is higher, so that subtracted from the overall height.

I was able to view the building elevation which shows the building heights. Hyatt Place will be 207 feet from street level to the pyramid top at the corner of 3rd & Brazos. And it will be 192 feet to the mechanical penthouse and 180 feet to the main roof. If it were complete today, it would be the 37th tallest building in Austin right between the Capitol Centre and Callaway House (which is also under construction).

Update from this afternoon, more glass has gone up on the corner and the stucco is almost done.

The view from the convention center.

Looking North up San Jacinto, it really does complement the Hampton Inn next door.

From the top of the city parking garage.

And from the parking lot that will soon be the JW Marriott.

Hopefully once all the windows are in the contrast between them and the facade will make it more attractive. I am really liking the northeast corner of the building. That glass is nice and I certainly appreciate the rooftop ornamentation. It looks like a baby Hilton to me.

This building's starting to grow on me. The glass and pyramid really saved it.

Just had an up close look at the Hyatt under construction. THe glass corner is OK, but it does not hide the fact that this is one cheaply constructed and ugly looking buiding. There is just nothing to like about it except that it fills in a parking lot and gives a little heft to the streetscape. I think the very ordinary Hampton Inn next door is actually a nicer looking building in some ways. It looks alright at street level and the upper floors could almost be mistaken for a pre WW2 building.
