Kolkata's famous Book Fair which is amongst the World's largest was forced to move to Salt Lake from the Maidan by the High Court for environmental reasons. So it may lose its big tag and also a lot of visitors, but book sales are supposedly up from last year.

It is probably one of the largest in the world.

Kolkata does have another large stadium (for cricket) which has a capacity of 110,000 (wikipedia). It is the Ranji Stadium at Eden Gardens.

Two stadiums over 100,000 in one city, amazing. But where the heck are the parking lots?

Park on the greens and the road sides. Most people take public transport.

This is the 'downtown' area - partly reflective of a city whose economic growth died down after the seventies and has only just now taken an upturn.

Some more photos of this area from the AJC Bose flyover

Typical housing board apartment blocks - this one is Purbachal in Bidhan Nagar. Nowadays, the housing board is mostly involved in highrise apartment projects through joint sector ventures.
