U.S. Hunger for Yogurt Leads to Gigantic Factory

Published: December 16, 2012

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/17/bu...m=twitter&_r=0

Quote:
Chobani, the yogurt company that grew from nothing five years ago to a roughly $1 billion powerhouse today, on Monday will formally open one of the world’s largest yogurt-processing plants in Twin Falls, Idaho.

“I’m so excited,” said Hamdi Ulukaya, founder and chief executive of Chobani. “I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long.”

The $450 million, 1 million square-foot plant is the company’s second. It will employ 300 people, and Mr. Ulukaya said for every 10 jobs it creates directly, it is expected to create roughly 66 additional jobs in ancillary businesses. “The state expects the total economic impact of our business there to be $1.3 billion,” he said.

In exchange, Chobani qualified for a variety of state tax incentives, including property tax exemption and credit off tax liabilities. Idaho’s position as one of the country’s largest milk producers and the transportation network around Twin Falls also were attractions, Mr. Ulukaya said.

Idaho is the 2nd largest milk producing state in the twelve western U.S. states and ranks 3rd in the total U.S.

^^^ Sorry to interject, does this account for all milk, or just cow milk? I'm sure Utah produces a lot of milk, just that most of it isn't counted in the GDP (mormon mothers)

Thanks for the laugh. Probably just cows milk. I am sure your state's (mormon mothers) milk stats are quite high considering the unsurpassed amount of pro creation that takes place down there adding to your population

Really unfortunate to see the growth rate of Idaho has really cooled off. We're not even in the top 20 fastest growing states over the last year. Surprising, and hopefully not indicative of a long-term trend.

Idaho's population grew by less than 1 percent less this year

During the heyday of Idaho’s growth boom just a few years ago, the Gem State regularly held a spot as one of the nation’s fastest-growing states.

This year, Idaho did not even make the list of ten fastest-growing states, dropping to 24th with a .8 percent population increase.

Idaho’s population this year increased by 11,984 to 1,595,728, making it the nation’s 39th most populous state, according to Census Bureau state population estimates released Thursday.

I like this news because it permits us time to catch up on infrastructure to equal the booming growth we have experienced the past couple of decades.

Idaho will always be a fast grower in population, even if it chilled this year because we have abundant natural resources that are drying up in other states. States that grow too quickly, quickly lose their charm. Wyoming probably grew at a faster percentage this year because a couple of large families moved there.

Police say Crapo had BAC of 0.11; senator says he's "deeply sorry" after DUI arrest in Virginia

December 23rd, 2012

Quote:
U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, issued a statement Sunday evening apologizing for the actions that led to his arrest on a charge of driving while intoxicated early Sunday morning in a Washington, D.C., suburb.

“I am deeply sorry for the actions that have resulted in this circumstance," Crapo said. "I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me.”

I love those photos Sawtooth, we live in a beautiful playground.

Crapo slipped, broke the Word of Wisdom (I am sure his bishop will have to talk to him lol) but he is human, not perfect and if he isn't used to alchohol he should not have driven anywhere. It is just silly how the fascist extreme far left people are trying to ruin him over this and also drag the Mormon religion through the mud...like they never mess up

Here is Idaho's snowpack as of today. Most of the state is above 100% average so far this winter which is good because it keeps our prized forests, like in Sawtooth's photos above, green and beautiful....except for those damned forest fires that pop up each year

McCall brewery thinks big

Published: January 23, 2013
By PATRICK ORR — porr@idahostatesman.com

Salmon River Brewery co-owners Matt Ganz and Matt Hurlbutt will never forget the day Adolphus Busch IV walked into their small brewpub and started talking beer.

They had heard from friends that Busch, a member of the St. Louis beer family famous for Budweiser and other top sellers, had tasted their brews and really liked the Udaho Gold ale. He visits Central Idaho every summer to raft and enjoy the pristine wilderness.

How snowy has it been this winter? Boise has had more snow this winter than New York, Boston, Kansas City, Philadelphia, and Chicago. Definitely wasn't the case last year! http://goldensnowglobe.com/all-snowiest-us-cities/

I actually like it, I really hated the drought we had last winter. Oh! And there's a Winter Storm Warning out there. Stay safe, Boiseans!

Population trends in the Gem State.

Idaho’s growth slows, but the shift from rural to urban areas continues

March 14th, 2013

Quote:
The Gem State grew by 12,000 from 2011 to 2012. But that was one-eighth of 1 percent, the smallest annual increase in 20 years, the Idaho Department of Labor said Thursday of newly released U.S. Census data.

About 85 percent of rural counties had a net loss: 28 out of 33 counties lost population, with 5,600 more people moving out than in.

Four years of consecutive losses for rural counties: That’s significant. There hasn’t been such an exodus from rural Idaho since the recessions of the 1980s, labor officials say.

Just three of 11 urban counties had net gains: Ada, Canyon and Kootenai counties offset out-migration from the other seven urban counties, growing by about 13,000. Urban counties are home to almost 66 percent of the state’s 1.5 million residents.
