My guess is that its Cinco De Mayo. We can see the Mexican Mariachi Band and all of the on-stage civic hoopla near the City Hall. Looks like a nice warm May day. Any other ideas?

I spy the old temporary court buildings which were dreadful.

Hey ER. From the crowds near the upper and lower Stations of Angels Flight, could this day have been the last weekend of service?

I rode this once. Not really my idea of fun. It just seems too dangerous to me. Great photos though.!!

1945
About forty thousand people attend a special Cinco de Mayo celebration held on the Spring Street steps of the Los Angeles City Hall.

Ezequiel Padilla, Mexico's Secretary for Foreign Relations and former Washington ambassador, visited Los Angeles in May, 1945. During his visit, he was honored at a special Cinco de Mayo ceremony held at Los Angeles City Hall. Some other prominent guests at the event included: Mayor Fletcher Bowron, Mexican Consul General Col. Vicente Peralta, and Bishop Joseph T. McGucken.

beautiful image T2.

When I came across this menu on ebay I hadn't heard of the Via Vigna Inn at Hollywood & Vine.

After several searches I finally located it in this kodachrome slide from 1962. (it's on the right)

ebay

more of the menu.

A couple of old hotels I wasn't aware of:
First, the Lyndon Hotel at 413 E. 7th Street. (built 1910)

looking east of 7th Street toward downtown.

gsv

I really like the old red on white neon sign

postscript:
I found a great vintage slide of the Lyndon Hotel.
you can see it here: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=26350

The other hotel is the Lyndon's neighbor, the Hotel Madison at 423 E. 7th Street. (also 1910)

I just found this on the Lyndon Hotel. It was stripped down to it's shell at one point.

The Lyndon apparently had an entire hotel (apartments?) grafted onto it:

Time for some fun with Google Street View. See how many of these Atwater Village bungalows you can find.
