That whole thing just proved that the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat should stick to studying urban habitats instead of tall buildings because they obviously can't tell their ass from a hole in the ground. Petronas isn't just a few stories shorter than Sears, it is twenty-two stories shorter than Sears, which means that it stole the title. Either that or the panel at the CTBUH gave the title to Petronas because they got a big kickback. Either way, it's bullshit, their criteria is ridiculous.

Although...by roof height, SWFC is taller than Taipei 101, which only takes the title due to the pole stuck up top. Anyway, considering Burj Dubai's progress, it's a moot point.

Technically, SWFC isn't much better since it just has two empty metal frames on the roof, connected by an enclosed catwalk. If you're gonna count from true roof height, then it would make more sense to consider the building's functional top at the bottom of the hole.

In Simple Terms:

Tallest completed skyscraper: Taipei 101 (When measured to architectural top including spire)

Tallest Roof Height: Shanghai World Financial Center

Tallest To Pinnacle Height: Sears Tower (Counting its antenna)

Tallest Under Construction: Burj Dubai (Already surpassed Sears and Taipei 101 as well as CN Tower in Toronto and soon will be the tallest structure ever built)

Burj Dubai. Finished or not, I do believe that it is now the tallest man-made object on the planet, building or otherwise.

hmmm......

I'm not so sure of that. People built toward the skies long before 1783

I beleive the modern skyscraper is, yes, an American invention. We're talking skyscrapers here, not a stone church. I guess we can call the pyramids skyscrapers too then.

Btw, that thing in Kentucky is god awfull. Is that a kickstand?

^ So what if Americans invented the skyscraper? Is that the only thing we can say to make ourselves feel better? Americans stole ideas from a bunch of other people in the world and make it their own. Maybe it's time other countries did the same and own it.

The "modern skyscraper"... as we use it in this country... is an American invention. But to say that people did not engineer and design buildings before is incorrect. My pictures may be just a "stone church", but it's obviously a model for our earliest skyscrapers from the 1880s. The craftsmanship and dedication that it took to build those places (without the aids of our technological advancement) is more impressive IMO than most modern projects.

that's the sad truth of empire.
you give the world a crap load of stuff and the world just grabs it, makes it bigger and better and gives you no respect.
britain gave the world the industrial revolution, modern democracy, modern justice, modern transportation including intercontinental shipping and railways.
and what do we say in return.
oh the british..they have bad teeth.
that's the burden of greatness.
america is just now feeling the pinch of decline as the world moves on.
