It is very extreme unfortunately. I'll give you a couple examples, but there are many many more. US core cities.of their metros aren't as celebrated as they are in Canada as you're about to see. The common theme in all these cities is low income and a history of racism.
Wilmington, Delaware, population 71,000, 27 murders in 2010 for a rate about 30 per 100k. That a city a tenth the size of Winnipeg with the same number of annual homicides. Median income for a family is $37,352.
Detroit, Michigan (city proper, not metro), I don 't meed to convince you of the history of racism as it should be common knowledge. Population: 681,900, Murders: 333 (in 2013), Rate: 49 per 100k
New Orleans, Louisiana (city proper not metro), huge white flight lost half their population since 1950s. Population 360,000, murder rate 56 per 100k, 214 murders.
Kansas City, Missouri, 464,000 people (city proper), huge population loss after massive white flight. 106 murders last year for a rate of 23 per 100k.
Cleveland, Ohio, 390,000 people (city proper), 84 murders last year, rate of 22 per 100k. White flight has caused over 60% loss in their population. Median income for a household is $27k per year.
There are far more cities like this too, unfortunately. The main difference betwwen murders there and here is that ours.are.most domestic.disputes, theirs are mostly due to gang violence. South Africa has a murder rate of about 35/100k, but there random violence is very common, so you always feel like you're in danger. Even in the States random.violence is relatively uncommon, murders are committed by people who know each other.
