Mecca is an interesting city in that its center is permanently fixed, as opposed to a typical city, where redevelopment or sprawl can move downtown jobs elsewhere.

as a result the desnity is quite incredible. and I feel this is just the beginning, as the Islamic world grows more prosperous, the intensity of development here will rise proportionally...

The building is a monstrosity and is way out of context for the site. Why this would be allowed so close to one of the worlds holiest sites.

I think performing Hajj and Devotion to God far way more important than preserving such historic places... so if destroying them will make Hajj better, more comfortable, and safer... let it be ... and there is no problem with building huge construction in Makkah for pilgrims accommodation..

However, my concern is.. it is too close to Holy Mosque .. think about this...>>

in year 1900 ... People who were coming to Makkah for Hajj do not exceed 50,000 at most ... and now they are more than 2 million ... I think in year 2050 they may reach between 5 to 10 million ... So sure the Holy Mosque needs Expansion ... Is there a place for this ???!!! or maybe it will be vertical expansion rather than horizontal ??!! Did they consider this??!!

Anyway, when I see something like this--the size and the location--my first question is, "What's it for?" In other words, what is the purpose of the building? Is it a hotel? Offices? Mixed use? My constant suspicion about all the building going on in the Middle East, where there is lots of money but not so many people, is, "Why do they need these buildings?" and "Does it really make sense to build them all?" Mecca may be an exception because of the large numbers of pilgrims who come there, though.

LOL I have thought about the same

they can make vertical expansion,
they just need to add a Black Box supertall
above the kaabah stone, it will fit right in!

The Holy Mosque is what around Kaabah ... no one can pray inside Kaabah ...

and Please remove the Picture because it looks Offensive...

you are right it was over the line...
It was just the first idea of possible expansion,
that came to my mine, should have thought before posting........

BTW: I think this project is begining to look good actully.

To me, it looks like a downtown core being squished into one super-fat building......it looks kinda scary in a freakish way.

This building is horribleeeeee!! that style of architecture should not go taller than 100-200 meters! ist horrible and its location is even worse IN FRONT OF THE MECCA! thats like building a fraking 500+ meter tall building in front of the Vatican or the Great Wall at Jerusalem!

I am one of the few people that loves the design and detail of this project. I think it would be better placed in Las Vegas, but still like it.

The building won't be the only one there. There are many other massive projects coming up in the city. They would all complement each other.

I don't know what is worse - the building, or that there is a KFC at the bottom right base of the building in the 5th picture from the bottom.
