"Another portion of the Grimke School redevelopment is coming into focus.

The Community Three Development-led team is seeking historic approval for a plan to replace the surface parking lot at 912 U Street NW with a six-story mixed-use building. Up to 30 apartments would be delivered above a 3,500 square-foot ground-floor restaurant; five surface parking spaces will sit behind the property...."

Downtown—FBI Building

The General Services Administration (GSA) announced Monday, February 12, a plan to demolish the current J. Edgar Hoover building in downtown DC and build a replacement structure on the site to house the headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The decision was a dramatic shift from earlier plans to move the Bureau to a suburban campus facility in either Maryland or Virginia. About 8,000 staff will work in the new 2.3 million SF building, a number down from the current 11,000. Some staff would be dispersed to other facilities around the country. Already the decision is drawing sharp criticism, particularly from Maryland congressman and House minority whip Steny Hoyer.

The J. Edgar Hoover Building was constructed in the early 1970s and opened in September 1975. The building embodies the Brutalist architectural style then in vogue for large civic structures.

I have mixed opinions about the FBI HQ continuing to remain on PA Ave. Moving the headquarters to Springfield or Greenbelt would contribute to sprawl and encourage more people to drive to the facility than its current location near several metro lines. Additionally, having several thousand well-paid FBI employees contributes to local businesses and DC tax revenue (restaurant taxes, hotel taxes, etc...).

On the other hand, Pennsylvania Avenue is a largely lifeless stretch and mostly vacant outside of business hours. Additionally, having residential or commercial office space here would contribute property taxes.

Also, the current FBI headquarters location offers unparalleled convenience to the Trump hotel and 1600 PA Ave when Trump is arrested for treason, money laundering, fraud, etc.

^Beautiful. But don't forget obstruction of justice.

It's a pretty easy decision for me at least, this seems to be the best of both world's: erasing the abortion that is the JEHFBI building from the landscape of DC and building a new one on the same prime central site, keeping [most] of the employees in the center of town and all that brings. My biggest wonder is where they are going to operate for the 4 years or so it's under construction?

"After years of contentious debate and a cumbersome approval process, the former Valero gas station at Pennsylvania Avenue and M Street NW has come down to make way for a new residential project.

As reported by Georgetown Metropolitan, over a year after Georgetown developer Eastbanc received zoning approval to redevelop the gas station at 2715 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, the station has been demolished..."

Here's what a suburban D.C. county pitched for Amazon HQ2 — and why it lost

By Katie Arcieri – Staff Reporter, Washington Business Journal
4 hours ago

Weeks after being shut out of Amazon's short list of contenders for HQ2, Prince George's County, Maryland, has learned why it did not make the cut: The county doesn't have a large enough pool of senior-level software engineers.

"They saw deeper concentrations of software development engineers in other areas," said David Iannucci, a top economic development official for Prince George's who spoke with Amazon, along with other county officials, on a phone call. "They literally told us there was nothing we could have done differently in the RFP to change the outcome."
