I believe this is the longest road bridge in Calgary, the Bow River Bridge, part of Stoney Trail. Probably about 300 meters. Not much to look at really It would be nice if they had put some architectural thought into the only road bridge long enough in Calgary to warrant some architectural merit. C'est la vie...

http://www.stockaerialphotos.com/-/g...-the-bow-river

Hopefully once they redo the Crowchild Trail Bridge and interchange into downtown they will put some architectural thought into that project. Actually, that one is probably the longest road bridge in the city, technically. The northbound side is elevated for 750 meters according to Google Maps.

^ Stoney Trail was provincial, wasn't it? They did the same with the Henday bridges here in Edmonton - very basic steel and concrete bridge with no real design aesthetic (though Stoney gets a few points for the more interesting pillars and suspended pedestrian crossing). Very unfortunate given the natural setting of these river crossings.

I really like Calgary's. The slender piers, cable-stayed pedestrian crossing, lighter colours (no exposed girders), single deck for both directions... all help the bridge blend in to the natural environment. Edmonton's looks purely functional.

Both were built by the province for the cities' respective ring roads, Calgary's in 1996-1997 (as the first element of the ring road) and Edmonton's completed ~2006.

Edit: "The first leg of Stoney Trail, from the Trans Canada Highway to Crowchild Trail [including the Stoney Trail Bow River Bridge] was a City of Calgary project, with the City managing the construction, and the Province providing the majority of the funding." Source link by SSP'er 5seconds

The Stoney Trail - Bow River Bridge in Calgary, Alberta won the international award for "Structural Engineering Excellence" in 1999. The bridge was constructed in an environmentally sensitive location with limited access. Possible fluctuations in temperature of 88 degrees Celsius also had to be considered in the design. It is believed to be the first ever twin-celled incrementally launched concrete bridge.

MTO is the same with their basic, basic bridges. Their version of "architectural" is placing the ontario crest on the sides of it.. (seen here) their only major architecturally interesting bridge is the Burlington Skyway and thats largely just because its old. There are a couple of bridges left in MTO control that have above deck support structures, but generally its just boring beam bridges.

They are building a new Cable Stay bridge in Nipigon though, which is nice.

Dunvegan Bridge, Alberta's longest vehicle suspension bridge. Spanning the Peace River 26 km south of Fairview. Built in 1960, it is next to Dunvegan Provincial Park, a National Historic Site which is home to historic buildings including one of Alberta's first fur trading posts and missionary centres.

I am really quite partial to the new Mackenzie River bridges on the TransCanada east of Thunder Bay. The slender piers with the cantilevered arched steel beams is a nice touch:

I love it. It looks like somebody built a bridge in Muskoka for a handful of cottages.

So they're going forward without an LRT right of way?

Lovely photo. Drove across that bridge on several occasions.
